Hi,

I have been reading about a product that some salons use to straighten curly hair. My hair has gone from a nice wave to curly after having children. I would love to have it straightened but I am wondering if anyone else has done this and how it turned out.

Thanks,

L.

So What Happened?

Thanks everyone for your responses. I think I am going to invest my money in a good flat iron ( the one I have just does not do the job). If I have good results with that, then I will stay with that.

If anyone has recommendations on a good flat iron, please respond.

L.,

I had my hair straightened about 3 years ago. Although I did not have the problems that other posters stated, I didn't feel satisfied with the results. It was OK, but not worth the money. Also, as stated by others, curly hair is easier and after 30 some years, I came to terms with it. Wash, Condition, Product, Scrunch, done. If I want it straight, use the straightening iron.

Hi there. I had my hair chemically relaxed a few years back and like the other poster, it fried my hair. It wasn't sleek and glossy, it was rough, dry, and all over the place. It took a few years for my hair to grow out and I still have a lot of breakage on the top layers that I have to content with. I'd advise against doing it.

I agree with the other posters. I straightened my hair when I was in college, about 15 years ago, and it's never been the same. Prior to straightening it, I rarely could even find a split end in my hair. Since then, my hair is so dried out and I have a ton of breakage. It's never really recovered. I have to have deep conditioning treatments to infuse it with some moisture now.

Of course now I love my curly hair. It's so much easier than straight hair. Just wash & condition, throw in some product, scrunch it a bit, and go! If I feel the need for straight hair once in a while, I just use a straight iron on it, no need for permanent straightening.

Embrace your curls!!

I have very curly hair and I went to a salon about 2 years ago. I don't know what they put on my hair, but it was just supposed to relax it a LITTLE BIT. My hair came out stick straight and fried. I had to blow dry it straight every time I washed it and use a straightening iron. It would take me over an hour to get my hair to look halfway decent. It was a nightmare. I know some people have had good results, but my situation was horrible. I had to wait for it to grow out (about a year and a half) and it the mean time as it grew out it was half straight half curly.
Like I said, I know some people probably have good results, but now I'm from the "be happy with what you have" school of thought.
Good luck,
S.

Hi L.,

Unlike the other responses, I absolutely love my hair relaxed! It is shiny and soft and more manageable. I get my hair relaxed about 1-2 times a year at the salon. However, it really depends on your grade of hair (I am of mixed race - my mom is white and my dad is black, so I have a combination of the two types of hair). I really think it also depends on who you let do it and the brand of chemical they use.

If you are afraid to get it relaxed, you could always buy a flat iron (I use one of these on my 4 year old's hair - as well as my own). There are also blow-dryers that have attachments that can be used during drying to straighten out your hair (con-air has one that is suppose to minimize frizziness).

The least you could do is go to the salon and ask them what they think. I really liked the JC Penny's salon in Woodfield Mall, as the lady who did my hair there was fabulous (she is a Master Stylist and her name is Mary)! However, they are kind of expensive (depending on the length of your hair - mine ran around $110 each time). But when thinking about price, remember that saying "You get what you pay for." I use to get it done at a cheaper salon - and it washed out everytime!

Again, I think each person's results are different because of the grade of hair and the brand/type of chemical that is used, and whether or not your hair stylist is experienced in the hair-straightening process.

Hopefully I haven't confused you since my results are not the same as the others.

hello, I have curly hair and had it straightened once. It was so bad my hair was like straw and took 8 months for it to look half way normal again. Your better off getting a super good hot iron then to have it straightened.
