Has Anyone Ever Seen Icebergs Travel past St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada?

My DD is currently obsessed with the Titanic and icebergs (timely, given the 100th anniversary is this year). Well, while doing all of our research, I've found out that there is something called "Iceberg Alley," just off of St. John's Newfoundland, Canada. There are excursions to go see them.

Have any of you ever been? What did you think? A drive there from here would be two full days of car travel, so I wish to know whether I should bother. Thanks!

What can I do next?

I haven't been where you're asking about but thought DD might still be interested.

While in Alaska I went to Glacier Bay. Glacier Bay has the most active calving tidewaters than anywhere else in the world. Monumental chunks of ice split off the glacier and crash into the sea. The sound is like thunder. The impact shoots water hundreds of feet into the air. You hold your breath while you scramble to catch the moment on film. Moment I'll never forget!

Hi there --

My husband is a Newfoundlander so I'll throw in my vote for St. John's. :) Yes, there are great icebergs there, but only seasonally. If you go, be sure that you're traveling at the right time of year. (Typically, late May, early June) But consider other factors as well. Newfoundlanders are very friendly people, there's lots of good live music, and there are other worthwhile spots to visit (Cape Spear, Cabot Tower). If you watch Republic of Doyle you'll get a bit of the flavor ;)
And no, you don't have to kiss a cod to visit.
Have fun chasing the bergs!

We lived in Alaska 14 years and lived near glaciers. We got to see lots and lots of big beautiful icebergs of all shapes and sizes and lots of calving of ice into the water. We have paddled our kayaks around them, but not too close bc they can suddenly roll on you. We have scooped up teeny tiny pieces of iceberg and chooped it up to put in out drinks...just for fun. I have not been to Iceberg Alley but I think you should go!

My husband grew up in Newfoundland. I asked him and he said he saw iceburgs all the time when he lived in St. John's. He said it's only certain times of the year. Not year around so do your home work before you go. I've never been to NFLD but from what I've been told it's a whole different world so be prepared. The accent along is very strong and heard to understand if you aren't used to it. I've been married to him for 11 yrs and still can't understand most of his family.

There is a great Titanic museam in Nova Scotia that I visited about 12 yrs ago. lots of walking tours around the town and a titanic cemetery that was really neat to view. Lots of titanic history there since that was where all the survivors were brought to.
