Happy Hanukkah! We celebrate Christmas, but this was a refreshing reminder of the other holidays celebrated this time of year, so thanks for that :)
Hope you get some great suggestions, and have fun!! :)
What are some of your favorite Hanukkah recipies? Aside from latkes, of course - but I'm cheating this year and doing them out of the box :(.
My mom is bringing kugel, I'm looking for a great brisket recipe and I want to use a really nice casserole dish that my MIL gave me...maybe veggie/spinach casserole? I've looked at allrecipes.com and nothing really 'POPS' as a great meal. This will be for Friday night, so at least I have more time to prepare!
Again, Happy Hanukkah!
Merry Early Christmas as well :) But that's for another day :)

Are you ready for the best brisket recipe ever? I not Jewish and my husband is and his family was *shocked* last year when we hosted Hanukkah dinner for the first time at how darn good this was.
5-6 lb brisket
1/4 c water
2 large onions, peeled and sliced
4 stalks celery, cut in 1/2 in slices
1 8oz bottle of chili sauce (or you can make your own with tomato sauce, brown sugar and spices)
4 cloves garlic, peeled and chopped
2 bay leaves
1/4 cup brown sugar
1/3 cup Dijon mustard
1/4 cup red wine vinegar
3 Tbsp molasses
1/4 cup soy sauce
1 can or bottle beer
1/2 tsp paprika
salt and pepper
Preheat oven to 325 with rack in lower third but not bottom of oven
Sear the meat, fat side down first, in the bottom of a heavy pan (I use a Dutch oven and cut the meat into two pieces). Turn meat over and sear other side.
Add the water, onions, celery, chili sauce, bay leaves, garlic, brown sugar, mustard, soy sauce, vinegar and molasses (so...everything but the beer and paprika/salt/pepper). Cover and cook for 3 hours. Then, add the beer and cook for another hour, making sure there is liquid in the pot. Remove meat and let it rest for a few minutes, season with paprika, salt and pepper. Slice the meat against the grain, arrange on platter, drizzle with sauce from the pot and serve with extra sauce on the side.
Enjoy - and Happy Hanukkah!
Happy Chanukah!!!! I had to work last night and tonight, so we are celebrating tomorrow. im making matzo ball soup. :) red wine is great for cooking brisket. how about a spinach souffle? those are allways good. :)
I'm not Jewish, but I have a friend who makes carrot and yam tzimmes as a side dish for practically every holiday, Jewish or not. I have the recipe stashed somewhere so if you really want it let me know and I'll find it for you. Happy Hanukkah!
