Hanna Anderson Clogs for 5 Year Old??

Hi Moms,
My 5 year old daughter will be starting kindergarten soon and has her eyes on a pair of wooden clogs from Hanna Anderson. They are really cute, bright red and painted, but set on a hard wooden bed/heel. Are these comfortable and good for a 5 year old? I suppose they have been traditionally worn for ages, but I hate to spend the money and have them be so hard and uncomfortable that she won't wear them. The salesperson said they are very popular and I know many people who are on their feet all day swear by the Dansk version (also on hard wood). I'd love to hear from someone who has experience with kids and these wooden shoes.
Thanks!

Kindergarten is the place where they learn to tie shoes and need all the practice they can get. Also orthopedically speaking kids at this age need solid support and are already challenge in the safety area of rapid growth and a new enviroment. Please don't give her one more challenge to deal with. I as a Mom would like to see schools up to Senior in high school ban flip flops, open backed shoes, shoes that are supposed to tie that don't have laces and heels that are sold over 1 inch. My daughter at 6 received a pair of shoes that added 3 inches to her height. She also received a sprained ankle and 2 weeks on crutches.

Susan, Let me preface this by saying I do not have these shoes. but I am going to give you an answer to your question form a teachers / daycare providor's point of view. Get shoes that have backs to them. shoes that tie/buckle securely onto your child's foot for school. Kids do a lot of moving / running / going up and down stairs etc. they don't need to be in shoes that do not securely stay on the foot. I am not against clogs / flipflops etc persay. but they don't really work very well for everyday school shoes. kids fall off of them their feet slide out and its just plain hard to keep up when your feet are not securely encased in shoes that fit. She is only 5 and will have plenty of time to talk you into grown up shoes later. but for now stick with a regular school shoe. you will be glad later that you did.

They are cute, but are not safe on the playground or during PE. With all of the moving around, jumping, running and climbing that kids do at this age, I'd recommend that she not wear them to school or while she is out playing actively.

My now 11-year-old lived in Hanna Anderson clothing and clogs when she was younger. She loved all the stuff and so did I. She wore the clogs nonstop, and today she has normal feet -- no problems. I guess it depends on your daughter and her comfort level, but my daughter never complained about her feet hurting. (The clogs are pretty lightweight)

(One poster talked about wearing shoes that stay on. The clogs we bought had straps that kept them securely on the feet. I would only get those kind if there are options. I don't think little people could keep the other kind on.)

Do the clogs have a strap that goes around the back of the heel? Many schools have 'shoe limitations' due to safety issues. You might wish to first check with the school to see if open-backed shoes are allowed before you make this investment (unless, of course, she doesn't care that she might not be able to wear them to school).

Hi. I love these kinds of shoes and they were very popular when I was in school back in the 70's (cough, cough). However, we were not allowed to wear them in school. I would suggest you make sure you school allows them and I also would be conscious of the fact that they may not be suitable the playground. : )

I had wooden clogs back in the 70's loved them but I was in high school. You have to look at what they will be doing in class. Will she be able to play and move around freely in these clogs or will she end up taking them off. Although we like to give our children evey thing they would like my option is go with the more sensible choice and save your money because when she get a few years old you will really have to shell out the money to keep with the fashion trends.

My daughter had a pair that she wore when she was about 4. She LOVED them. She did wear them to preschool, but they were not going out to the playground in them. For kindergarten there are probably safety concerns with a backless shoe and may not be allowed. But in response to your question, about the comfort, my daughter loved those shoes and you brought back a very happy memory for us this morning. :) Ours were from Hanna Anderson as well. She never complained about comfort when she wore them.

Hi Susan! We are a big Hanna Andersson fan ourselves, and I bought my daughter some red clogs when she was that age. I think they are good shoes for an occasion like church (and we have bought some since that she wears on such occasions), but I would not buy them with the intent of her wearing them to school as her main shoe. It is not that they are uncomfortable, but they do hinder play on the playground. I think the girls like them because they feel like "big kid shoes", but they cannot properly run, etc. in them. Hanna does make a rubber soled clog that is better, but I don't think they have quite the same appeal to the young ones. Good luck!
