Hang-up Cell Calls

OK, I am seriously at my wits end. Someone has gotten a hold of my cell number, and seems to think its some sort of game to call me several times a day, listen to me say hello? hello? like a fool , then hang up on me. One of the most recent calls, I was driving the kids home from daycare. It was about 5:15, rush hour on the highway, the phone rings unknown and I know I shouldn't have answered, but I did anyway. It's ignorant things like this that just really burn me up. My cell provider said there is nothing I can do except change my number, so says the police department as well. So I figured I might as well ask the Mamas for help. I really cannot change my number at this time for numerous reasons. All my family has this number, the kids' daycare, my husband's work, and several companies that I have job applications out at. If I change the number now, and one of these places try to call me back, then I'm missing out on a job opportunity. Please, if anyone can help me with this, or offer me ANY kind of advice at all, that would be so great.

What can I do next?

My husband had some teenager girls get his cell number and they would call and hang up all the time, and text him stuff like "Justin iz so hawt!" It got annoying. First we got an airhorn and blew it whenever they called. The last time they did it I answered, heard them giggling, so I pressed a random key on the phone and said, "Yes, officer, this is the caller and number I want to prosecute." They never called after that. They were kids so it was not hard to scare them a little.

My question is, why are you taking those calls? If you don't recognize the number, just don't take it. If someone really needs to hold of you, then those will leave a message.

Do you have voice mail? I would try to let calls go to VM for a few days. You will get the messages from serious callers b/c they will be decent enough to leave a msg. Also, always check the Caller ID. When you give out your #, maybe warn people that if it comes up 'unknown" you tend not to answer b/c you've been having some problems. Good luck. You shouldn't have to change your number, but I do know from experience that the phone company's no help and neither are the cops unless the caller stays on the line and makes verbal threats...repeatedly. Mom stop answering private and unknown calls. I had the same problem not sure if it was one of my nephews little girl frinds or what but they were really making me act unlike myself if you know whay I mean. They eventually stopped and I have my phone back. Just let everyone who calls you private know to identify there number or they will go to Voicemail. It will eventually stop. I've had my number for 5 years and I was not going to surrender it.

Good Luck

Hello Cinthia,

Some phones have an option to block a number that calls. You might want to check your phone "manual" to see if you have that option. Or you could play dirty and choose the option to dial back the number that just called you. Most phones will store the last number called and if you push to talk to that number it'll dial it back. I'm sure it's some dumb punk kid that thinks it's so funny until the favor is returned. Hang in there and good luck with the new job opportunites.

If there is caller ID by ringtone, set the ringtone different for this number (what ever number is calling you.. check "received calls" , then save, then edit) if that ring ton plays then you know not to answer it!
You can do the same (I think) if the i.d. is "unknown". Then you will only answer calls from people you know / who identify themselves. Hop that helps!

Stop answering unknown id calls. If it is important then they will leave a message. If the police and ur phone provider say there is nothing u can do then they are probably right. Don't stress what u can't change. STOP answering the calls!

Hi Cynthia!

I went through the same thing with my cell phone and my provider said there wasn't anything they could do. One of my friends in the same situation told the police that she had gotten a death threat, though that wasn't true. If they're blocking it so that you can't trace it in any way, and you're sure that it's not someone trying to reach you that should be, I'd try the bull horn. If you're going to let it go to voicemail, make sure your message doesn't give your last name just in case and stop answering the calls unless you're going to blow their ears out. Otherwise, change your number and send a follow up letter to the places you've applied...it might bring you resume back up to the top of the stack, you never know.

We had this happen on our home phone and found out it was a schoolmate of our daughters. Does your 4 yr. old know your number and is there a chance she would have been able to give it out? Do the calls always come up unknown? If not you can use reverse directory at whitepages.com and find out who it is if the number is listed. I would check your phone manual and see if you can do a number block. I have an old cell and it has this feature. I am surprised that your provider didn't direct you in that direction at least.

I know this seems pretty far fetched but.... maybe it is possible that it is coming from a computer based system. We often get calls at our home that sound alot like what you are describing and write them off as an ISP or hacker. The fact that most cells now are web enabled makes this seem like a possibilty.

my guess is that it is probably telemarketers, i had the same problem a couple months back, what i did was go to the nation do not call list www.donotcall.gov and put your home and cell phone numbers on there, it takes about a month and my calls stopped. They are usually computer generated, but if you get a number to come up, you can call it back and usually there are directions to remove yourself from their lists.

Cinthia,
First of all -- are you sure you are not just losing calls? If not --- your provider should be able to trace the call. I had the problem of losing calls all of the time and my provider had me dial *** send each time I lost the call. See if you can do something like that so that your provider can see which number it is that is calling. The other option is to see if you can block the call. Lastly, carry a whistle and when the person calls blow the whistle loudly in the phone --- they will get the message.

Have your husband or another male answer as if they are a police officer. Say "this is sargent....with the ....police department. You need to stop calling this number or you'll be charged with harassment." If you're sure it's actually a person calling. It could be a computer generated call. Good luck!

Cinthia:

I can understand your frustration. First, Who is your wireless carrier? If it's Verizon, I think they have a feature where you can put a block on it. Secondly, do you have your cell # registered on the "Do not call registry?" If not, I would definitely do this. The website is www.donotcall.gov. Hopefully, one of these options will stop the calls. Best of Luck! T.

That is annoying. Are you able to assign a special ring tone to certain numbers who are calling you? If so, you can assign a special ring for your daycare, husband, etc. Then you can ignore it if you don't recognize it and the kids will tire of calling if they aren't getting a reaction. I agree with one of the other posters...if it's a potential employer calling, they will leave a message.

Hi your cell phone provider can trace that call if just rather not be bothered I work for a security company and we do it for Verizon all the time. Ask to speak to their security department, also on your statements does it show all the incoming and outgoing numbers that were made? Have you tried the *69? Call your carrier again and ask to speak to their security department. Good Luck

This may be a little immature and not what you really want to help take care of your problem but I know you can send fax on demands through your computer. So if you know the number that is calling you send them a whole bunch of faxes in the middle of the night. A friend of mine didi that and there was no longer any calls from that number to his cell phone!

Cinthia --

I would be extremely concerned over what ever other personal information this person may have gotten of yours. It is a lot of work to have to change your number - but I would do it in a heart beat - IMMEDIATELY! And check into other personal information to make sure it is safe and secure.

Hi Cinthia....
I had this happen to me sadly. I got phone calls at all hours of the day and night....I just started letting them go to voicemail and then they kept calling. They wouldn't leave any messages and then I started answering the phone "this is...." like they were reaching a "desk"...or I'd answer like a business and for some odd reason...it quit. Not sure it would work for you too, but I think they were stupid enough to fall for the fact that the number got changed!

Good luck....
