ok first I am sorry if this is a long request, but I want to give you all the information i can to get the correct responses. I have been a hairdresser for about 13 years now and have slowed down alot in my business about 2 years ago with my last child being born. about a year and a half ago I started having wierd symptoms in my right hand. Now lately about the past few months its getting worst as each day past. what happens is my thumb and index fingers lock up, meaning the kind of drop down and stay in a stiff position where i cant move them for about a minute, the feeling feels like a charlie horse. It happens when I wash my eye makeup off for to long, hold a book for to long here lately it happens any time I do anything with that hand with the simplest task as stirring dinner. and now my ring and pinky finger are starting to do the same thing, like when I vaccum. I have no idea what is wrong with me and I have search the web to try to find out, but I cant find anything. If anyone can give me any insite I would greatly appreciate it.

What can I do next?

I'm a musician, so I've heard of this before. It sounds as if you have focal dystonia. You should see someone about it. I have heard that deep tissue massage is helpful.

See an orthopedist to make sure your ligaments and joints are in good shape then go "green". As a hairdresser you have been exposed to lots of chemicals that have not been tested for long term neurological side effects. The tests are not required by the FDA or EPA and in most cases do not even exsist. I found out by accident that I was suffering from external toxic exposer when I went "green" for a job with Melaleuca. I was a carpenter and had similar problems in my hands for years as well as some extreme neurological symptoms, but they are all gone now. My doctor says the toxin poisoning is difficult to diagnose and is not even on the radar of most doctors but it is becomeing more and more accepted as families across america are going green and their medical problems are lessening or disapearing altogether.
You can use Aveda, Pangea Organics, Seventh Generation, or Melaluca products. Most Grocery store brands are not green even though they say they are like Windex only added yellow dye when they went green they didn't change the chemical make-up it still has ammonia in it or eco-friendly palmolive dishwasher detergent contains chlorine bleach which is not good for the enviroment or people. The afore mentioned companies are trust worthy and consistent. Melaluca is the least expensive way to go, but you may need more product choices for your hairdresser business that is why I suggested Aveda and Pangea Organics.
Good Luck!

Well, some people are completely against what i am about to advice. But, i am a big believer and actually had a thumb that used to lock up. Sometimes, it would be so scary i didn't think it was going to let go again. So, my advice, see a chiropractor!! I have been seeing one for twenty years and have had really strange problems disappear by the time i leave his office. In fact, i even worked for my chiropractor for a few years a long time ago. But, one time, i had excrutiating pain in both of my middle knuckles. I mean, it was getting so bad, that i honestly thought cutting them off would be an option. When i went to my chiropractor for a bi monthly visit, i told him about it. He told me it was probably coming from my neck and for the first time, i thought he was crazy!! Anyway, by the time i left his office, the pain was gone and never came back. So, that's my advice!! But, as with a doctor, check around, their are money hungry quacks in every proffession. Best of luck.
Have a lovely day and god bless!!

Could it be carpal tunnel? Maybe your muscles are just overworked and locking up???
I would see a Dr., just in case you can get permanent damage.

Could be a nutritional issue.
Could be a Magnesium deficiency.
Natural Calm is a powdered mag. you can add to hot water and drink like a hot tea. Comes in several flavors and can be found at most health food stores.

Have you tried massage?
Do you consume foods / drinks with artificial sweeteners?

If you eat the typical American diet you could be having some symptoms that could be reversed if you change your diet.
Have you ever read "Eat Right for Your Type"? It's an excellent resource.
Also, Dr. Mercola's nutritional typing is amazing.
His website is: www.merola.com (a fantastic site!).

A massage therapist or good chiropractor may be able to help you find a solution more quickly than a doctor.

Hope you find the right answer for you.

Have you been tested for or researched carpal tunnel syndrome in your wrist? I don't know all the symptoms but it might be worth checking this out since it might be causing this problem in your hand. It so sounds like a nerve issue to me so maybe a neurologist could diagnosis.

I have 3 protruding disks in my neck/back and have issues in my hands and right arm. I have twitching, numbness, stiffness in my hands, especially with the pinky and ring fingers etc...and when I raise my right arm, like brushing my hair our of my face or putting in a pony tail my R arm draws up and freezes up for a few moments.

I say have a doctor check you out. There are many illnesses that exhibit a variety of symptoms, many that can be treated with simple means like medicine or surgery. Others, like MS, if caught early can be treated with medication and lifestyle changes. They can't be cured but symptoms can be reduces and controlled for longer periods of time.

I would ask your doctor, but it sounds like carpal tunnel. I get it when I am pregnant and for me it just feel like I can't move my hand or some fingers. At first I didn't think it was that because I thought it mainly effected people in the wrist. But I've asked and seen multiple doctors and that is what they have said. I've heard it is fairly common for hairsylist to get because of the repetitive motions done throughout the day. I've found wearing wrist braces/splints at night help with having less or no episodes the next day. Good luck!

Sounds like either carpal tunel or tendonitis, probably from the repetetive motion of using scissors.
See an orthopedist.

Is it your actual Fingers locking up? If that is the case it is probably Trigger finger. I had this in my Thumb. It came and went for weeks. I finally went to a hand doctor and received a steroid shot in my thumb (this really hurt! just warning you) A week later it was totally back to normal. Doc said if the shot didn't work the do a little surgery where they clip the tendon. Simple in office procedure.

Hope this helps.

I have never had that problem, but I'm thinking that is a symptom of arthritis. Could be other things too I'm sure. I would go see your doctor to figure out the cause and see if there is anything that can be done to help or prevent it.

Dear K.,

Sounds like you are a busy lady who loves being a Mom!
I am not a Doctor, and I suggest you see one. But that being said, I will tell you that my Mother in law was a hair dresser for years and also worked out of her home part time. She experienced the same symptoms that you are having and it sounds like carpal tunnel syndrom. Many people who do repetetive motions with their hands and wrists experience this. Look it up on Web MD or some other medical web site to get more information.
Good luck to you. I hope you can get some help with this problem.

OK I work in outpatient rehab doing Occupational Therapy...sounds like either trigger finger or tendonitis...NOT carpal tunnel syndrome - this is actually charaterized by numbness in your thumb and first 2 fingers...no where else. It could be a deficeincy in your body as the other lady said.. Surgery is NOT the solution and neither is wearing a brace to sleep in (sorry to the PT friend) Regardless, you need to make an appointment with your regular physician and get his opinion and see if he will give you a prescription to receive OT then search out a reputable clinic or even a hand therapy clinic..these people are more knowledgable than general physicians regarding these types of issues ONLY because this is their area of specialty where physicans have to have global knowledge

Hey K., a couple of other things is arthritis...a simple blood test can tell if you have the "markers" for it and what type of arthritis it is....or "trigger fingers" where they lock in one place and then pop when you make them bend at the joints.....it's probably from the repetitive motion....maybe as someone else suggested, carpal tunnel...just go to the dr and find out what's up. Good Luck, R.
