my son has had hand foot mouth virus for 4 days and now ear pain, but took him today and no ear infection, they are thinking it is the sores way in the back by his ear that is hurting. tylenol, ibuprofin nothing seems to help the pain, he is three years old is it possible for them to prescribe stronger pain meds. they told me he was too young for magic mouthwash and we have tried chloreseptic spray. he finally was drinking more but now the ear pain has left him not wanting to drink even his medicine.

What can I do next?

Im sorry! I know that it is a virus but there's got too be something he can do for him. Give him a call back and let them know. Poor baby, I hope everybody feels better soon! They give kids stronger pain relievers when they have surgery although I can't recall any names. Good luck

We just survived our 2nd bout of this! (Yes, they can get it twice.) At 3 1/2 they did give him magic mouthwash...the big deal is whether he understands to spit and not swallow the medicine. We had our son practice with water first. The other thing I learned was that there are lots of different types of "magic mouthwash" depending on the doctor.

We also did the alternating ibuprofen/acetaminophin (tylenol).

For food, we did lots of popsicles (nothing with citrus), yogurt, jello, and pudding. The goal is to keep them from getting dehydrated. (Worry about nutrition after they get better.)

I would definitely call back and ask for something else to help the pain. While it has to run its course, you should be able to give him something to help him manage the pain.

my son had it and he got baby strength lortab. also, we gave him pediasure shakes because he wouldn't eat anything, only drink and only after being sprayed with chloraseptic (his sores were ALL in his throat/mouth, he was in agony, and didn't eat solid foods for almost a week). those pediasure shakes are good in cases like this.

I had this when i was a kid. I was given Tylenol with codeine. I don't know if he is old enough for it, but you might want to ask. I know in Europe and Australia, you can buy it OTC for babies and kids!

you just have to ride it out. my daughter had it at 13 months its not fun. just keep trying to push fluids and the pain meds. if needed give him 1 dose of mortin and 1/2 dose of tylenol.
