Does anyone have any advice on how to deal with hand, foot and mouth. My poor 14 month old is miserable. She goes through phases where she seems OK then cries for hours in pain. Its just awful, any advice would be greatly appreciated!

So What Happened?

Thank you everyone for all your advice. She seems to be feeling better..still not eating but no more fever. The one thing she now has though is a rash on her head, and chest. I know the doctor did say she would get a rash so hopefully this is the end of it! I will just pray now that our 3 1/2 year old doesn't get it..:o(
Thanks!

ugh....my son had it in June. It's awful. I don't think there was anything that made him feel better, not that I can remember anyway.

I am so sorry to hear this. I was just telling another Mama who's child had a foot issue, that my son had Hand Foot and Mouth, but it was only on his feet, no other symptoms. Did you consult the DR. Will Tylenol or Motrin help? I hope it passes quick for her. I have heard Summer is the season for H,F & M.
Best of Luck

Oh boy, this seems to be going around A LOT right now. I had my best friends daughters (2 and 6 months) overnight last week. The 2 year old spiked a fever out of nowhere so we took her to the ER. She did have this and since then my kids have had it too. There isnt much that can be done but the doc did say to give Motrin as opposed to Tylenol. Motrin is an anti-inflammatory and will help with the sore throat. I hope this helps.

Oh L.....I feel your pain, it's a tough one to get through, especially when they are that little-my oldest had it pretty bad around the same age. I would mix Benadryl and Mylanta in a little medicine cup and swab the sores in the mouth and toungue and as for the blisters on the hands and feet not much except to keep clean and dry. If she is having a hard time sleeping try a little Bendadryl 1tsp. it keeps the swelling down or Motrin.
You'll get through it...

Hi L.!
My daughter had this when she was older (3.5) so I'd check with your doctor before doing it but my pediatrician had me mix maalox with benedryl (I think) and just rub it inside her mouth, we did not have her swallow it! and it seemed to help with pain of the mouth sores.

There realy is nothing else that you can do for their pain. I feel for you Mamma! I know how tough if is. I dose get better.

My daughter has had this twice. She couldn't eat for three days.. It peaked with a fever of 103.0... It seemed to last about three or four days. My Dr. recommended ice pops, ice cream, pudding..anything that would go down smooth and lots of liquids.. Some of the foods can really sting the back of their throats if they have the sores all in their mouths which is what my daughter had... Its horrible and there is really nothing that you can do for it... it has to take its course... Poor little girl... its a HORRIBLE experience to go through because there is not much that you can do...

Alternate tylenol and motrin every 3 hours. For example, at noon give her tylenol. At 3, give her motrin. At 6, give her tylenol again, and so on. It will help keep the fever down and keep her a little more comfortable. Popsicles might help too if she has the sores in her mouth and throat. And of course, lots of extra hugs and cuddles. My son gets this from time to time and it's one of those really frustrating viruses that you have to let run it's course. She should be fine in 3 or 4 days.

ugh, i hate this viral thing. my youngest has something similar, right now, not as bad accompanied by diahrea...yay.

when my oldest had it, we did ice pops and ibuprofin and lots of water, thats about it. It sucks but theres not much else to do. Warm baths and hydracortizone for itching. It should be gone soon, Good Luck!

Hi L.,

So sorry to hear about your little one, Hand, Foot and Mouth is aweful and unfortunately there is not a whole lot you can do. My nephew just had it and my sister said she just let me rest, drink a lot and eat popsicles. I'm not a big fan of juice, but you might make or buy some 100% juice popsicles or freeze squeeze yogurts (I think Stoneyfield makes organic ones) for her to suck on, the cold will help if she has sores in her mouth and throat. I would think some kind of pain reliever would help if she has a fever or is in pain. Try to keep your other daughter away from her since it is highly contagious. Sorry I'm not more helpful. Good luck!

When my daughter had it, they suggested to have them rinse their mouth with a mixture of benedryl and mylanta. It helps to coat the mouth and they get some relief from the sores. I can't remember the doses. If you ask the pharmasist they will be able to tell you. I had never heard of it but the pharamcist had and it did help. Good luck.

It should only last a couple of days
Definitely give her a pain reliever in the form of motrin or tylenol.

call the doctor again as there could be another problem like ear infection or strep throat causing her undue pain.
