My 12 year old daughter is having a Halloween party and wants to watch a scary Halloween movie. She wants to watch Halloween and I'm not necessarily apposed but I have considered if it might be too scary. I'm not looking for anything like Hocus Pocus or Twitches but something scary that won't frighten her so bad she has nightmares for days. I love scary movies and think back to when I was 12. I watched all sorts of scary movies with my friends. My daughter on the other hand is not quite as bold as I was. I am looking for some suggestions. Any ideas you have would be great. Thank you!!

What can I do next?

I just have to say that Psycho changed my life--I was scared of my shadow for a year, and since I saw it as a college freshman I've not been able to tolerate anything close to a horror movie. (that's going on 40 years now) So, just beware of that one.

How about old Twilight Zone episodes?

And I love Young Frankenstein. :-)

Fun to read other responses. Perhaps Coraline, Corpse Bride, Addams Family, Beetlejuice, Igor (?) Little Shop of Horrors (?)

The Nightmare Before Christmas and another vote for Beetlejuice. Anything Hitchcock.

I always liked "Beetlejuice," which is more comedy than scary. I am not too sure about "The War of the Worlds," as I have a hard time sleeping after that.

When a Stranger Calls, remake. The movie IT still scares me and I hate clowns because of it!!!! Goodluck.

I agree with MS, the old old black and white scary movies. I can't do scary movies at all. The ones I can think of that are fairly tame are ones like Six Sense, The Others, Nightmare before Christmas

Why don't they watch something like "Scary Movie" which is a spoof of scary movies. It is mature and funny but not sure if PG.

Watcher in the Woods. It's a good scare without the gore. It's an older Disney flick, but not cutesy like so many Disney movies

The Chucky movies made me squirm at that age, and Halloween scared the life out of me in the 5th grade! But I loved it and still love scary (the scarier the better!) movies. :)

The old version of Dracula is pretty cool. Spooky but not scary... or War of the Worlds?

Keep in mind the difference between scary & gory. Just my opinion, but movies like Halloween & Chucky are more gory. IT is a good choice. I'm not really into scary & definitely not gory, so no extra help.

I went through my movie collection & came up with a couple. "Fire in the Sky"-not a terribly scary movie, but for about 15-20 minutes. "Bram Stoker's Dracula"-but may not be appropriate for 12 year olds. (?)
I was very disappointed with the ending, but the movie as a whole wasn't too bad--"The Village". I usually like M. Night Shyamalan movies. They are usually more suspenseful.

The Village. Maybe Signs or Paranormal Activity.

I know you have gotten a lot of responses to this question, but I just wanted to suggest another resource, commonsensemedia.org
They have a website which rates, tv, movies, music, websites and books, based on age. I'm sure you will be able to find suggestions there.
Good luck!

How about some old scary movies like The Haunting, House on Haunted Hill, or The Birds. Maybe Mary Shelley's Frankenstein. You can always go funny too as a back-up with The Burbs or Young Frankenstein!

The Frighteners was pretty good. I am just not sure about the really scarey ones for girls so young. I would also check with the other girls' parents...they might have limitations on what they would want their kids to see. It would depend on how mature the girls are, I guess.
Practical Magic is a good one too...scarey, but not too bad.
