So I have a Halloween party to go to in a week. I HATE buying costumes. Such a waste of money. My husband and I do not HAVE to dress up but my kids really want us to. Does anyone have ideas of something I can put together for us? I don't mind buying some peices to put something together but only if I can use it again. And we don'e have to cordinate either although that may be fun.

So What Happened?

Thanks to everyone whi responded. I really like so many ideas and will have plenty to use in the future. I ended up grabbing a huge orange tshirt for me and a huge white one for hubby from walmart. I painted a black face on each and I was a pumpkin and hubby a ghost. I did some modifications on the shirts and made myself a green leafy viney hair clippy. We were pretty cute. And we had a blast at the party last night. Thanks, again!

Here's an idea: My family doctor came into the room a few Halloweens ago with empty mini cereal boxes hot glued to his lab coat. They had plastic knives stuck in them with what looked like "blood" around the boxes and knives (probably red nail polish). I asked what his costume was, to which he replied, "A Cereal Killer"... LOL get it??!! heheh anyway, you could do that. It basically costs just the price of the cereal and knives and you/hubby can use an old shirt to glue the boxes on. It's good for a good laugh, and you don't have to deal with makeup, masks or bulky costume things....

Have fun!

Jack and Jill. Easy and can be done many ways. For traditional Jack and Jill you could probably use what you have in the closet -for Jack, rolled up jeans or shorts, plaid shirt, suspenders and a BROKEN crown. Jill- cute girly dress, shorts or jeans and a pail of water. Or more modern Jack and Jill: Blue Jeans, Plain T-shirt with name Jack painted, printed or pinned on one and Jill on the other. Jack has a broken crown and Jill the cute pail of water. Simple and easy! Enjoy!

My favourite costume has been static cling. I wear a bed sheet. I sew a few bras, panties, socks and dryer sheets to it. I spike my hair and put some socks in my hair also.

My hubby went one year as a CHICK MAGNET - he wore all black and we sewed a few baby chicks on him.

My daughter has been a Q Tip. We dressed her in white and made a hat and shoes covered in cotton.

Other costumes:
Pretty as a Picture - dress down but do your hair and makeup like a pro, then make a picture frame from cardboard and carry it around "put yourself in the picture"

my hubby and I attended a adult party he was the plug and I was the wall socket (just made out of cardboard)

My oldest and I dressed up the same and went as "Mini-Me"

Wear white, cut out brown cardboard circles, hang it over your shoulders and make yourself "an oreo cookie", have someone else make themselves a glass of milk.

Be creative. Have fun. It Halloween...enjoy it!

PS - as a family Health coach - i am going to ask you to think about giving out bouncy balls, bubbles, or other fun toys in lieu of candy. Please.

I am a big fan of a cat. NOT original in the least, but sooo easy & inexpensive & it makes the kids happy :) I wear a black shirt, jeans, black kitty ears, and fingerless gloves (they are black & pink striped & they have been with me for ages), tail on the back of the jeans...and voila! A cat ;) Add some pizazz by using some black eyeliner to draw on whiskers & doing a little cat-eye look on your eyes, pink lipgloss... Easy peasy...and a cat kit (tail & ears) is like $5 @ Target! Hubby can wear a button-up shiet, cheapie glasses taped in the middle & his pants up high & be an engineer - haha! My husband is an engineer so we think this is funny! Or spike up his hair, add $5 spray on hair paint, rip a shirt & be a rocker. Kids don't care what you are really, they just like that you're participating!

Good luck!

You could go as a fan of your favorite team (baseball, football, nascar...local teams too). Presumably you already have shirts or jerseys or could purchase to wear again. Buy a few color coordinated accessories (kids can use later even if you don't).

Buy red shirts and blue wigs. Make a circle out of white construction paper, felt, or something similar and write Thing 1 on one and Thing 2 on the other. Secure to the front of your shirts.

What are your kids going to be? You could coordinate with them.

That's very funny, ML B...I don't think Adam and Eve would use anything already in the closet! Maybe out in the yard? ;)

It would be easy though, as you say. And would probably get quite a response (although I don't know what the kids will think)...

My daughter went as a tourist last year. Hawaiian shirt, flipflops, shorts, fanny pack and zinc on the nose (white face paint). Another person I saw wore all black, did make up like she had 2 black eyes and pinned pieces of paper cut out like the letter "P". She was the Black Eyed Peas. Get some scrubs and a withc hat and go as a "Witch Doctor". The creative possiblities are ENDLESS!

The first thing that came into my mind when you said cordinate, was my BF's friend. Him, his wife, and their 6 kids all went as zombies! It was too cute.
For things like this I like to just get a cheap accessory kit at walmart. They have ones that have bunny ears/tail, cat ears/tail, cowboy guns/belt, you name it. They also have a ton of hats this year (pirate, cowboy, flapper, etc). After buying the accesories, I just use my own clothes.
Good Luck!

Two years ago I went as a pumpkin. I got an orange shirt off of a clearance rack, painted a face on it with markers, then I pulled my hair up in a ponytail on top of my head and stuck a couple of green leaves in the hair tie. I was 7 months pregnant and couldn't find a costume that fit. Took me 10 minutes and I spent $3 on the shirt.
Last year I went as a cat. I took an old pair of black sweatpants and cut them in half. Roll the legs into a long tube shape and glue the edges. Then cut out 2 triangles and tape to a hairband for ears. Just draw a pink triangle on the tip of your nose and draw whiskers.
My hubbie went as a Wii game controller. He got 2 boxes (got them at the grocery store, just ask) that we taped together and covered in white paper. Then with gray construction paper he cut out the shapes of the buttons on a controller and glued them to the white covered boxes. Tape some ribbons into the top so that they rest on your shoulders and cut out 2 holes for the arms.

Have fun!!!

I have used the "Target worker" costume before. Assuming you have a red shirt and khaki pants with tennis shoes, all you need to do is print out a Target logo with your name for a name tag. Done! It will not win you any costume prizes, but easy and cost effective.

I suggest going to a couple of thrift stores and putting a costume together. Thrift stores abound with ideas. They have an entire section devoted to them. My daughter ended up putting together several odds and ends that were on the bizarre side (bright colors and lots of glitter) and said she was a gypsy. She may have called it something else. Saying gypsy may not be pc now. :)

There is always the bum who wears anything grubby and torn looking.

A fancy dress, a tiara, and a wand will make you a princess. A cape and dark clothes will make him a vampire or a devil. Add a top hat and he's a count.

An "old ladies" dress, sturdy, sensible shoes, a white wig or white powder in your hair, lots of costume jewelry and you're a countess, a maiden aunt, an old maid. Add a cane with a limp and you become a granny. You can tell I'm not very pc at times. lol

I saw a guy once dressed in a flannel shirt and a pair of jeans for which he took another pair of jeans and tucked one leg inside the pants he was wearing, then he stuffed the leg that was hanging out, additionally he had a mason jar filled with water which was suppose to look like moonshine, a blackened tooth and a rope as a belt.. he was suppose to be a hillbilly that (due to that extra leg) might have been inbred and of course was partaking in moonshine whiskey... it was really funny and he did it all with jeans and a shirt... you could be his partner and blacken out a tooth as well.. or something to that effect..

we are very very big on hats. simply add a hat to whatever you're wearing (or ears or some other headpiece) and you're done. the kids can use the hats for dress up later. we probably have collected a hundred hats and now we use them for ALL kinds of occasions. of course you can wear mismatched clothes to go with it or silly makeup or whatever to extend whatever theme the hat is.

You and hubby could wear white t-shirts with 'got milk?' written across the front, and paint on a white mustache.

If your kids don't have costumes picked out already, they could be cows, milk maids, farmers, etc. (all of which are pretty easy/inexpensive to make) to complete the family ensemble!

We like to go as our favorite TV characters (mostly cartoons) like from Futurama or the Simpsons for example
this year we are doing characters from Harry Potter.

You could dress up as each other, that would be funny.
or put on all your jewlery and be "royalty" or a rapper, whatever kind of jewelry you have.

We always keep a trunk full of little costume pieces that we collect.

have you tried checking at yard sales and thrift stores? people sometimes think that getting clothes from those places are gross, but if youre looking for a costume its pretty much a gold mine, and its not like you cant throw whatever into the wash! some people are just too stuck up for their own good!

My fallback has always been a witch costume. I bought a cheap hat and (black & orange stripped) stockings a few years back. You pair it with any black dress, do dark makeup and paint your nails. My hubby went as a ghost that year and my daughter was a pumpkin so we were the classics. We actually did win awards (completely unexpected) But it was lots of fun! (FYI: the stockings were for kids so I modified them as knee highs for myself)

My fall back costume is a gypsy. Wear a flowy skirt and peasant type blouse, add a head scarf and one around the waist (I wear a lacy shawl over my skirt. Put on all your jewelry and lots of eye make-up and you're a gypsy. Or at least my version of one. lol

Hubby can be a gypsy too or a pirate. Have him wear loose pants, tank top or no top, head scarf, eye patch, and carry a knife or sword. Don't let him shave for a few days or fake a beard with make-up.

Have fun at the party.

Buy a chef's hat and wear it with your apron, holding a wooden spoon (or whatever utensil). Your husband can go as a bowl of spaghetti - glue cream colored yarn all over a large trash bag that he will wear.
