Hello I'm 27 and had my first child about 4 months ago. About 3 weeks ago I started losing my hair, got a haircut about week and a half ago, still losing hair. My hair is everywhere and it's starting to worry me. I read online that this can happen after the horomones go back to normal, has this happened to anyone else?? Should I call the doctor? Thanks

What can I do next?

I was horrified when this started happening to me. I emailed everyone I knew who had a baby to see if this was normal. I was not the only one. I was losing my hair by the handfuls. I thought I was going to be bald by the amounts of hair that was falling out. It got better after a few months. Now I have new hair growing all over my head now. Now my hair falls out less then it did before I got pregnant. Hang in there.

I had the same thing and it freaked me out too. I got back on the pre-natal vitamins for a couple of months and it eventually stopped. I wouldn't worry about it. It will take care of it self and go back to normal.

DITTO.. same here.. i even went as far as to go see my dr.. and he took thyroid tests to reassure me.. but it was just because of everything your body has gone thru. my dr even said if you have had a surgery or in the hospital.. like when i got my appendix out.. same thing happened.. i had my son jan 04, appendix out july 04, and my daughter nov 04.. so my hair is finally getting some what back to normal.. i still have really short hairs around my forhead.. i think for me it will take a while longer to get back to normal if ever.. i 've been told by a few moms that their hair was NEVER the same. ugh..
good luck

Yep! Totally normal. With each of my kids, I started losing hair at around 3 mos. post partum. It really does stop...and your hormones "re-set" themselves for things to go back to normal. It takes a little while, though....a couple of months. It can look alarming, but everything should go back to normal.

I had hair loss and major weight loss after my son was born. Turns out my pregnancy casued me to hyperthyroid. Long story short, if you are having any other symptoms, I would talk with your doctor. They can do a simple blood test. It took me 2 years to realize my problem and my hair was soooo thin by then. By the way....it does grow back slowly. Good Luck.

Me too...
I was told that it is normal because you don't lose the normal amount of hair during your pregnancy. After delivery you are losing the hairs you saved up. I don't know if this is really true but it is normal.

Totally normal. You didn't shed any excess hair when you were pregnant, and with the hormonal changes it is bound to happen. I was freaked out too, but it will slow down soon!

This is totally normal and eventually will pass. It's a bit scary, but were but very normal as the hormones get back to normal following pregnancy.
No need to call the doctor.
Hope that helps.

You're normal!!! :) I had the same thing happen to me. My DS is 6 months old. I lost a lot of hair, daily, from about 3 1/2 months- 5 months. It just slowed down to the point were I think I'm back to a normal loss (everyone loses hair every day). My OB/GYN recommended that I stay on my prenatal vitamins to help reduce the amount of hair loss if I was concerned about it. I never was concerned, but if I had been I would have taken my vitamins. Hope this helps!

I started losing my hair around my baby's 4 month birthday. It went on for about 2-3 months, but it's finally slowed down. It was coming out by the handful and I couldn't imagine getting through it with hair still left on my head, but I did. I would say, more than likely, you're experiencing the normal hair loss, but I agree with some of the other posters, if you have other symptoms, call your doc.

You've had lots of responses, but I'll chime in. I was a little forewarned because gals in my nursing group asked about this. And yes, I lost a TON of hair at brighton's 3 - 4 month birthdays. He's 17 months now and I stopped losing hair around 10 mos or so but now I can finally pull most of the regrowth back into a ponytail. Or for the most part anyway :) That's one thing they never tell you about!!! But it's totally normal. I have a lot of hair so I lost a lot of hair and it really thinned out. You didn't lose much if any during pregnancy, so that's why it seems you're losing so much!!

This happen to me too.
I had my last two children back to back. When my last child was born I started to loose my hair too.
Thyroid problems run in my family, so I had that tested just in case and everything came back normal.
I do hear it is normal for you to loose some hair after having a child because of hormones.

I am going through the same thing myself. Although this is child #4 for me. I had the same occurance with all of my children. It will stop. Your hair will go back to the normal thickness that it was before you were pregnant. I know it is a real pain to be picking hair off of everything all of the time. It does get better. I wouldn't worry about calling the doctor.

My hair was the same way. mine was super thick and wavy before my son was born so thinck in fact i would break hairbrushes. Once i had him i was very concerned cause i was losing so much i literally clogged my drain. I also noticed my hair went very dark. I had lighter brown hair and now my hair is almost black. Hormones really change alot with each pregnancy. The beinifits from mine was sinc emy hair is a lil thinnner now i dont break hairbrushes anymore and My hair will actually hold a curl or straitening tool now. Before nothing would keep a curl in my hair. So embreace the new stuff. ITs not always as bad as you think. Also my hair was alot less frizzy after my son and with this pregnancy my hair is beginning to curl up on its own more. Your hair can also grow alot more during pregnancy so that can be a great thing if you like your hair long. Dont worry just enjoy it nothing is wrong with you :)

Hello A.. I've heard of hair loss during pregnancy due to hormones and stuff, but I never experienced it myself. I'd definitely ask a doctor though just to make sure or maybe even a phone nurse. Good luck and congratulations on your first baby :)

hi A....i'm a new momy and a hairdresser. I can tell you that hair loss is perfectly normal. ofter i stopped nursing and taking my prenatals, my hair started falling out in clumps. It is due to hormonal changes. while you are pregnant, you do not shed your hair like you normally would...therefore you get that thick full pregnancy mane. but once your hormones start to balance out, you start to shed again...what you are supposed to lose on a normal basis, plus what you didn't lose during pregnancy. most woman will have there normal head of hair back in a couple of months...it is rare that you will end up with less hair then you did b4 you got pregnant. but if that is the cse, you look noticable thinner...see your doc...an under active thyroid can couse you to lose hair.

This can actually be a sign of a hormone imbalance or a vitamin deficiciency, I would absolutely call your doctor, this can easily be fixed with some simple blood work and the right dose of hormones prescribed by your doc. If you'd like to see a specialist, Dr.Hilgers at the Pope Paul VI Institute is wonderful and specializes in hormone imbalances and a wide range of other problems. I wish you the best!

I started loosing my hair after my son was born, but not w/ my daugther. I to have hyperthroid and it is not caused by having children, it's a genetic thing and it's extremly normal. But if you are that worried about just ask your doctor. Like the other lady said, it's normal to loose hair after the birth of a child.

I don't think its anything you have to worry about. I didn't notice any hair loss with my first and second, but with my last one, I noticed the thickness of my ponytail had depleted. It has all returned to normal. R.

OH YEA! This will last quite awhile. It's awful isn't it? You feel like your hair is just everywhere and on everything. You'll find it sticking to your baby, etc. My daughter is now 5 mo. and I've been losing my hair for the past 2 months. It has slowly gotten better. I have a feeling within the next month I should be pretty well back to normal. So, give it some time. P.S. I tried the haircut idea twice and it doens't help much. Just hang in there a little while longer and things will get better.

A. I think that you are fine! I had this happen after both of my girls were born and I asked my hair dresser what was happening and she told me that it was natural. This is just the hormones trying to get back to normal. Also this will happen to me every 6 months or so and she said it's like your hair is getting rid of everything that is unecessary! If it would make you feel better to call your dr do that, anything to keep your mind at ease.

Yup, I agree with everyone else, you are completely normal. I had my b/g twins 5 1/2 mo ago and I am still losing hair. Taking a prenatal vitamin helps it a little though, but cleaning out my brush has become a daily ritual! LOL No worries! Take care and congrats (on the baby. . .not the hair loss) :0)

Continuing to take prenatal vitamins is the key to slowing this down. Some of the ladies that work at the salon I go to have never had kids, but take OTC prenatal vitamins for their hair and nails.

My OB had me on prenatals 4 months before we first tried and has told me he wants me to stay on until at least 4 months after I quit breastfeeding.

Good luck & Congrats!

OH A., I feel for you soooo much. I did the exact same thing after both my daughters were born. I thought the first time it happened I was going to be bald!!! My hair is really long too. Keep taking your prenatal vitamins & stop worrying. Are you breastfeeding? This doesn't help the matter either. I promise it will slow then stop. And pretty soon you will start seeing baby hairs growing in all over. Hey, don't use any rogaine products!! I started doing this, but my beautician from Teez said not to. It is something you will always have to use & if you stop the hair falls out. So, just have patience, don't freak out....well try not too. Good luck & I'm feeling for you!!! D. S.
