Hair Loss - La Crescenta,CA

Hi: I just had a baby 5 months ago and my hair seems to be falling out at a rapid pace. I knew this was something that could happen from all that I've read but what can I do? Will it grow back? I know this is a bit vain but I'm an older mom and I don't want to look so old to my baby. This worries me quite a bit.

Actually, my body has gone through so many changes lately that I feel very emotional about it. How long did it take other mothers to feel "back to normal"?

What can I do next?

Nioxin shampoos and conditioners (system 3 is what i used) work great. You have to get it from beauty supply so they're kinda expensive but worth it. My sister in law kept telling me to get it but I didn't listen to her, so she got it for me after I guess she noticed I was losing a loooooot of hair and looking depressed about myself. I cant' thank her enough :-)

G.,

I was 37 when I had my son, my first and only. He is 16 months old now. I lost loads of hair and everyone said it was normal hormone stuff. It was not. Please go get your thyroid checked. Mine went whack after having my son. This can happen for all kinds of reasons but if you feel the hair loss is in excess of what would be considered normal after giving birth, you can get a simple blood test to determine your thyroid function. It's important to do for many other reasons because it leads to other problems. Hair loss is an early sign and child birth can cause the thyroid to yo-yo. I have it under control and am healthy now... I was always very healthy even during my pregnancy but I sooo wish someone had told me this before I lost so much hair and went through so much. If it's not the thyroid try taking a primrose oil supplement for a while and you'll be fine. They say, under normal circumstance, hormones level off and hair will stop falling after a year. You lose more hair if you are breast feeding simply because your hormones do not go back to normal while you are nursing and you are providing nutrients for another life. If you are nursing, stay on the prenatal vitamin or ask your doctor what to take while nursing. You really do not need to worry either way if it's just normal hair loss. Don't forget that while you were pregnant you did not lose hair so all that you should have lost during that time is falling now. You will know what I'm talking about if it truly is excessive hair loss. I lost it mostly from my temples but my hair was everywhere before I got my thyroid in check. It was discovered by accident and I'm so grateful it was. Okay, hope this helps. All the best, A.

You are not actually losing hair. Your hair doesn't fall out when you're pregnant...you probably noticed it getting thicker. Now it's finally shedding. It will probably stop around 6 or 7 months post partum. I am 37 and have a 7 month old and am hoping I will feel like myself again soon too!

Not to worry. I had my 2nd baby at 41. It'll stop falling out. It's weird but then there are so many weird hormone things, eh? And it took about 6 months for it to stop for me too. And at least that long for my body to start feeling like mine again. The weight is another thing for me. Exercising more is my key. Looking back I WISH I'd taken advantage of the baby being in a stroller and walked a lot more.

I would say 6 months to 1 year to feel back to "normal." Be gentle to yourself. Look what you just did!

I experienced the same thing.A little bit of hairloss is normal after pregnancy ,as your body reujusts. If you are noticing alot more than you think is normal then I would get your thyroid checked. That was one of the major symptoms for me.I found out I had hypoactive thyroid, which is common after child birth.Hopefully it's just your body reujusting itself.Goodluck!

Hi G.,

Yes, this is normal. This happened to me post-pregnancy for both my kids. And yes, the hair grows back! This time around, I got bangs. It works out well because the bangs hide the baby hairs that are growing out!

Hi. The same thing happened to me but it all grew back (it took a while though). Once it started to happen I started taking extra vitamins. A few of my friends kept taking prenatal vitamins even after their babies were born to prevent this from happening.

Good Luck,
S.

Hi G.. I know how you feel. My son is 7 and a half months and my hair finally stopped coming out in handfuls a couple of weeks ago. Between that and him pulling my hair (ouch!) I felt like I was going bald! I was growing my hair long one last time before I'm too old (I'm an "older" mom too... at least that's what they tell me ;)), but I'm off to get it cut this afternoon, as I can't take how thin it feels. I've heard so many women say they experience this, so I try not to worry. Have you tried getting a trim? Maybe if the ends are more even your hair will look thicker? Good luck, and I think we will eventually feel like ourselves again. I've just started to.

This happened to me to. I think the worst of it was over by 6 months, then the hair really started growing back quickly around 9 months. Now at 11 months it's in an awkward stage and length, but luckily my hairdresser works her magic and blends it in pretty well! My hairdresser told me she sees it all the time and that it almost always grows back to what it was before the pregnancy.

totally normal. will grow back. make sure you are not taking too much vitamin A, as it contributes to hair loss. My dermatologist told me to always take pre-natals instead of regular multi-vitamins because pre-natals have less vitamin A.

Thanks God it passes! My daughter is 9 1/2 months and the hair loss has subsided for the most part and I'm just starting to feel fairly normal. I'm still breastfeeding so who knows if I will feel really normal again until we stop that. But I hear ya on all the changes and how emotional you get. I just turned 46 so ......I just started feeling like I could feel sexy last month. Never thought it would happen to me, but! there is light at the end of the tunnel!

My hair did this with my first baby. It finally stopped falling out when I stopped falling out around a year and at 14 months or so my hair started growing back. I had a lions mane for a while. It was awful.

Good Luck,
D.
