I am seeking any information about stress related hair loss. I have been dealing with alot of stress and began losing my hair and it is really freaking me out the Dr put me on Zoloft but I am beginning to think I am on the wrong medicine I don't think I am depressed I feel like I have an anxiety problem I constantly worry about everything and it seemed to have happeded after my second child was born 2 years ago. Is it possible to still be suffering from postpartum 2 years later? I know I had the baby blues after he was born but I thought I got through it. But it seems that ever since he was born mentally I have changed. I constantly worry that about death and my family's health it is so overwhelming most days. My Dr says stress is the culprit for my hair loss, but I just don't know I have been stressed before and never experienced hair loss. He told me to use Rogain but I am scared because it says for the first 4 months you may experience more hair loss, and I cant really afford to lose anymore hair. Any advice would help.

What can I do next?

Hi T.,

It sounds like you may be depressed or have postpartum stuff going on. I recently discovered a wonderful book called "Postpartum depression for dummies". The author Dr. Shosana Bennet talks about a wonderful nutritional system that she recommends. I recently started it and it really is working! Here is what she says in her book and how to contact her. Best of luck, C.

THE SYSTEM THAT I FOLLOW

I’ve always had a deep interest in nutrition and feeding the body what it naturally needs for optimum functioning (including brain functioning). A health nut since the 60”s, I’ve tried every way of healthful eating out there (a couple that were on the weird side, now that I lock back!). I believed in nutrition-not diets. My incessant search for a complete, simple system finally ended a little over two years ago-I found it. Since then, I’ve been using this nutritional system and introducing it to my clients (and all others I care about). It’s complete with high quality organic protein shakes, amino acids such as tryptophan (which raise serotonin), live enzymes, the essential fatty acids (Omega,6, and 9) in the correct ratios, vitamins, antioxidants, and ionic plant minerals. The system, which consists of foods that you eat in addition to whatever healthful food you’re already consuming, has a total body cleansing and detoxing component as well. The results have been quick and dramatic, and I’m thoroughly passionate about it. Some of the problems that I’ve seen either totally disappear or at least decrease significantly with this system are: depression, anxiety, decreased energy, difficulty losing weight, insomnia, sugar cravings, low sex drive, and difficulty concentrating. I’m not mentioning this system by name because I want to make sure you’ll be ordering only what you need and should have, depending on whether you’re pregnant, nursing, or finished with both. If you're interested, feel free to contact me for more information by calling ###-###-####.

HI Toyna,

I feel very sad for you. I can understand being under alot of stress. I also have 2 children and finally getting some much needed rest.
I can understand having the baby blues and I can understand anxiety. I have had both in my short life of 36 years. The reason the Doctor suggested zoloft is because anxiety may be just a symptom of depression. I have taken xanax in the past for severe panic attacks. It does work but is also a highly addictive drug. I have been put on antidepressants a few times in my life. This last time I was seperating from my husband of 11 years. My choice, but it doesn't make it less stressful. I went from a $25.00 an hr income to 6.00 an hour income. We had just moved completely across the country to start a new begining. Well after 4 months of me busting my hump to put food on the table. I told him find a job or you are out. He preceeded to tell me that he was too good of a person to work for less than 10.00 an hour. Thats when I said goodbye. It was a long time comming. Although the last 2 years before we moved were our best ones. When we moved he no longer was sober, turned to drugs and alcohol and gambling. With what money I don't know.
This is where my depression began again. I knew I needed to go back on my antidrepreesants. The biggest clue was my panic attacks returned and I had no appetite. When I said no appetite. I mean no icecream , no chocolate, no potato chips. I had lost almost 50 pounds. I was looking great but feeling unhappy. I can usually talk myself out of my panic attacks. But these were getting inberrible. I was living constantly on the edge. My advice for you would be recontact your doctor and see if you need an increased dosage of the antideppressants or you may need to try a different antidepressant. I was doing ok on mine but after about 2 months I didn't feel much different. So, instead of talking to the doctor, I pulled myself off of the meds only to find out, they were working. I knew this after taking myself off the meds, because i felt like everything was driving me crazy. I couldn't stand to listen to my kids whistle or clap thier hands ect. It just sent me over the edge. When I went back to the doctor told him that I pulled myself off of them but I would be willing to try again and will increase the dosage according to his instructions. You may also ask him about anxiety drugs. This may help also.

I hope this has helped a little. I wish you luck.

I know that this is going to sound funny! But, what kind of shampoo and conditioner do you use? I was losing my hair by the handfuls and I thought it was because I had babies, but after almost 3 years later, I asked my doctor. She asked me, "what kind of shampoo do you use?" Well, I used Pantene products...I really liked them. But, she said, "well, that could possibly be the problem". She said that every woman that she has come accross, that uses that product, has had the same problem, including her. She said that their seems to be a chemical in it that causes you to lose your hair. So, I stopped using it and so has my mom...and it worked! This may not apply to you...but, just in case! It's worth a try, right? Good luck & take care!

My mother has been a stylist for 20+ years and she recommends Nioxin products (you'd have to get them from a professional salon) for people with thinning hair/hair loss. Its one of the best lines on the market. Most consumer products available in stores are not the healthiest choice for your hair long term, and especially if you are losing hair, you may want to make the investment in products that are really working for you. This is not to say that there aren't other factors affecting it, but you can start there!

I was experiencing the same thing at one point in my life when i was stressed out,and i also was not eating properly because of the stress and that led to my hair just coming out so easily when i brushed or even as i ran my fingers through. I prayed and i tried to seek ways to relieve my stress, ate more healthy foods and i asked my hair stylist what i could do and they recommended something for thinning hair. It was a shampoo and conditioner and it also had a serum to use on my scalp that you massage in to your scalp and leave on. It didnt smell all that great but it was better than not having any hair. Maybe that may help but get some advice first, everyone is different. I also had not experienced hair loss when i stressed out before but im glad it doesnt happen like that all the time, we would be in big trouble.
