Do you have a Philip Pelusi salon close by. These people really know hair and can help you. Be careful if you use straighteners, they can ruin her hair. I have fine hair that can be worn curly (like a perm) or straight. I didn't realize I could straighten it so well till I went to Philip Pelusi. They showed me what products I needed as well as what type of brush to use. They also make sure that they show you how to style your hair right, so you can go home and do it yourself. I know alot of hair places don't bother with helping you to style your own hair. Good Luck!

I am a mom of three daughters, and one son. I am also a salon owner in Manheim. My shop is called Style Mosaic beauty salon. My oldest daughter is caucasion, however she has extremely thick hair and some patches are kinky and frizzy. What works for us is using Matrix Sleek Looks shampoo/conditioner and the extreme creme...it allows her to slide a comb right thru her hair after shower...if you or my daughter need more reenforcements, Chi silk infusion seems to work great. That would also be a great product for bi racial hair because it can be used on either, it will add moisture because it is a serum, and it has no alcohol in it. I do sell both of these products at my shop. If you mention that you were here on Mama source i will give you a good discount. Check out my website, http://www.style-mosaic.com I hope this helps. L.

I wish I could help you with you specific proplem. But my daughter has extremely curly hair (as do I). The main difference is that we are both caucasian. We both have to use shampoo, conditioner, and a fair amount of Leave In conditioner to even get a comb through our hair. I would try that. Garnier Fructis (or is it Nutriss) makes a great line of shampoo, comditioner and styling products for curly hair. It's not very expensive and it smells great. They also make staightening/ smoothing products. I hope that helps a little bit. The only other advise I can give you would be to go to an ethnic salon. They could give you the best advise on what products and techniques to use to safely straighten your daughters hair. Good Luck with everything. Curly hair is fun but getting it to do anything but be curly can be a pain in the butt! :)

Ok so I'm not bi-racial or anything but I do have long thick coarse hair. It isn't curly or anything but believe me it takes tons of effort to tame it. I've used many different hair products in the past and I would have to recommend conditioners like Aussie 3 minute miracle (use it every day)and Pantene smooth and sleek (warning I heard that it uses wax- which is not good for your hair- but it always helped tame my hair so I used it anyway). Currently I use Envia'a Ultra- hydrating shampoo and conditioner from Melaleuca and it works like a charm (you can only get it from the catalog, so if you want to check it out, contact me.) In general do not be afraid to be generous with the conditioner, I have to use about three times the amount of it than I do shampoo. As for keeping it or getting it straight a little bit of smoothing balm a paddle brush and a blow dryer helps. Thermasilk and Pantene make a gel type stuff that is made to help smooth and straighten hair. Good Luck I know how hard it is to manage course hair!

There is a pretty broad range of texture you can have with bi-racial hair. My daughter's hair is very coarse/kinky-curly, not remotely straight, but I think my experience may help you.

I found a product line that I love - www.curls.biz Their CurlyQ product line is the only one I know of specifically designed for bi-racial or multi-racial hair. They are the only one's that have products that work for my daughter and don't leave a nasty buildup.

To help prevent knots, comb and then braid her hair at night before bed or do large cornrows and/or use a satin night cap.

When she combs in the morning use a large tooth comb and a moisturizing detangler (I love the one from Curls because it doesn't have any alcohol) and comb thoroughly. Then use a leave in conditioner - this helps to relax the curls and gives a certain amount of hold to prevent more knots.

Hope this helps - I know it can be frustrating. A friend that I have just made contact with again after several years who has a bi-racial daughter who is 10. She said it took her up until recently to really find the products and methods that work for her.
