H1N1 Vaccine - Los Gatos,CA

Our pediatrician refused to vaccinate my 7 years old with H1N1 vaccine. His argument was a limited amount of the vaccine. They are administering vaccine to kids 4 y.o and younger. We obviously will change a doctor because I think it is outrages attitude but can someone recommend a place where we can get a H1N1 vaccine for a 7 y.o. child other than public health clinics. We have a PPO so can go to any doctor. Thanks

What can I do next?

No answer is going to satisfy you until you understand that it's not about you and your child. The manufacturers have not been able to produce the amounts of vaccine that they had hoped to have by now. The distribution has been uneven and even providers like Kaiser who have received the vaccine have run out and are not receiving large shipments any time soon. There is only one version of the vaccine that children 6-36 months can receive. That is most likely the version that your pediatrician has. As healthcare professionals, we're doing the best we can to protect the most vulnerable members of our population first. Even I had to stand in line at the public health clinics with my children, though I was among the first administering H1N1 vaccine in our county.

Dr. Dover is here at my office right now with it for people under 24. I guess pediatrics is not his specialty, since he's here. You might want to just try calling around.
I know it seems unfair that some get it and some don't. Their are many people bring in their teenagers and I'd think a 7 year old would be more suseptible.
That said, I'm probably not getting it for my son who's 1. I was going to take him to the county clinic but missed the date. I just heard 2 people in China died from the vaccine. He's very healthy and the H1N1 flu is supposedly like any other flu. Also, my father-in-law, husband, son and myself all had a horrible flu and my FIL thinks it was the H1N1 flu. He was pretty adament in his thoughts that my son doesn't need it. My sister told me there's mercury in the shot.
I have wondered though, have there been a large # of people who have died of it in this area? Anyone know? Last I heard it was 4 in Watsonville and I also heard of 1 in Santa Cruz.
One more thing... I know of at least 1 person who got the vaccine and still got H1N1.

The Santa Clara County Public Health Department is holding a free H1N1 vaccination clinic at the County Fairgrounds on Tully Road. The clinic will be held on Sunday, December 6th from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

If you or someone you know has a child who is younger than 10 years old and has had the first H1N1 flu vaccine at least three weeks ago, that child now needs to get the second vaccine to be fully protected.

Right now, here's who can get the vaccine:
Pregnant women,
Children and young adults between the ages of 6 months and 24 years,
People who live with or provide care for infants under 6 months,
And adults between the ages of 25 and 64 years who have medical conditions that put them at risk for serious illness and death from the H1N1 flu virus.

People in these categories who cannot get the vaccine through their healthcare provider should go to the clinic on December 6.

You can get more information at www.sccphd.org or by calling ###-###-####.

Actually, who gets the vaccine is not up to the doctor. The department of health has set up a list of Requirements for who gets priority. Doctors offices have to report back on who received the vaccine and what priority requirement the person met.
