Grunting Infant

My 4 1/2 week old will grunt at the same time every night after I feed her. It lasts about 30 minutes. I thought it was just because she is congested but it doesn't seem to be getting better. She also grunts throughout the day, randomly in her sleep. Is this normal?

What can I do next?

I was thinking it might be reflux aome babies get it does she spit up. Some times the reflux can be slient. If you are still worried about her I would take her to the doctor. I hope that you find an answer.

My son is 5 months old. He also grunted--but not just when he ate. He did it all the time...I guess he just figured out he could do it and liked the way it sounded. Anyway, he still grunts occasionally, but the grunts have turned into more of a squeal. Enjoy it while you can because they become so vocal so quick, and grow up way too fast!!

Hi, I'm a mom of 4yr old twins and a peds ER Nurse. Grunting is usually never normal. It's a way that infants use to open their airway. Do you suction the baby before feedings? Is the baby congested. Make sure you suction the baby before feedings and naps. You can use saline before you suction. This helps get more stuff out. Saline spray is sold over the counter. I'd mention these episodes to your Dr. Good Luck. J.

My daughter was a grunter too. Aside from the noise, we never had any other problems with it. She is 6 months now and she has pretty much grown out of it. Hang in there. It won't last forever.

My daughter always grunted... it was just a way to express herself and discovering the new noises she could make... even at that age. She eventually stopped; sorry I can't remember how old she was. It is completely normal though! Enjoy it, those noises are so cute!!

I agree with Sara check with your Dr. to assure it is normal for your baby. Some babies do that some don't. Just check with him to make sure that your baby is not having any kind of trouble.
Good luck

My daughter did that. Our ped. said that it was just her way of communicating with us. It was the way she was using her voice. As long as she doesn't seem to be straining or tightening up her tummy noises enjoy these cute sounds. My husband and I couldn't afford a camcorder so we purchased a tape recorder to record all the cute noises she makes.

As always if you feel that there is something wrong or worrysome no matter how small the problem or silly you feel, call her doctor.

I would consult with your pediatrician. My son grunted on occassion when he was sick and having trouble breathing. It may be normal for some, but in our instance, it was not. It wouldn't hurt to ask a professional on this one.
