I need help keeping cats out of my garden. I dont know if this is possible, but does anyone have any ideas on anything to make my yard unattractive to cats???? I have a small veggie garden, i couldnt figure out why parts of it are dying, thought maybe it was something i was doing or not doing. Over the weekend my dogs were barking at the back door ( they are outdoor doggies during the day but it was way too windy for them) So i looked outside and there was a cat using the bathroom in the exact spot that was dying in the garden. I cant say that i was thrilled. I do NOT want to harm anything but i dont want my garden to be the spot to poop in either for all the neighborhood cats.
One more question why is it ok for cats to roam free and use peoples yards for bathrooms but we all become enraged when the neighbors dog does it?

Honestly, I would go straight to the trap and take that cat to pound if possible. Maybe then it would teach the owners a lesson. I like animals, but there is a reason I do not have any. I don't want to clean up their mess or have them ruin things in my yard. I don't have any patience for cats that roam or dogs that bark at 4am (my neighbor and his 5 little yapper yorkies).

Mothballs. Sprinkle them around the edge. At least that's what I was always taught to do and it worked.

We put chicken wire over our garden in the spring. The cats only like when the dirt is soft and fluffy--they'll usually leave it alone once the dirt is compacted.

Squirt the cat with a water hose any time you see an unwanted cat in your yard..

You can also have your husband pee around the garden, you can use cayenne pepper sprinkled all around the garden (you will need to resprinkle after each rain).

Here in Austin there is no leash law for cats.

First let me say I'm a cat owner. However my cat is not allowed outside unless I'm out with her, never at night. And in most areas the rules are the same for cat's as dog's. Just alittle harder to run a cat off. It also bothers me when the neighbors allow their cats to run free and destroy/spray my property. Call your local animal shelter, most of the time they will bring out cat cages to catch the cat in. Some may say this is cruel, I say it's cruel to let your cat run amuk and possibly get hit by a car. Once the cat is caught if it is properly tagged the shelter will contact the owners to pick it up and pay a fine. Hopefully this will cause them to take better care of their pet. If it's a stray then maybe it will find a good home. How would these people like it if you thru your trash in their yard or allowed your children to run all over and destroy their landscape?

they hate lavender, you could plant some or sprinkle some dried around.. citronella bugs them , and most pepper too (sprinkle on the leaves)

Chili powder in the garden keeps cats out. It also keeps them from scratching on window screens.

They have these plastic spikey things to lay down in your garden that makes it uncomfortable for the cat.

However, if a cat is marking it's territory, it's going to be persistent.
My Mom tried EVERYTHING and was not having any luck solving the problem.
Finally she got a Have-a-Heart trap, baited it with tuna and took the cat to the pound. The cat had a tag so presumably the owners came when the pound called and got it and kept it inside there after to keep it safe.
It was the only thing that solved it.
I see no reason why private property has to be anyone else s animals toilet.
I would not harm an animal, but I know some people would have no qualms over shooting it.

We had a neighbor that had an indoor/outdoor cat. It would roam the neighborhood and then come in their house- really disgusting if you ask me. It tormented all the dogs in electric fences and it would pounce at windows with indoor cats sitting there. It got in all the neighbor's garages and peed all over everything. We re-did our walkway in limestone last summer. The very evening that it was finally finished and sealed, that damn cat came and had diarrhea on our front stoop- this was a week or two after the stupid thing had gotten in our garage and peed on my husband's car cover (btw, the garage was open during the DAY, and it is our right to have a reasonable expectation that irresponsible pet owners not let their nasty cats in our garage!!). I really don't have any advice to offer, just that I can relate. Fortunately for us (really, fortunately for the cat), we didn't have to resort to taking care of the problem ourselves, as the owner was foreclosed on and took the dumb thing with them when they moved!

I have heard that they are repelled by the scent of mothballs. Just need to be certain if you are placing mothballs (which I think are poisonous) near your vegetables that it wouldn't be harmful to you. Good luck!

All of the natural deterrents suggested might be of help but in my experience different cats are repelled by different things and it might take a lot of trips to the grocery store to find the one that works for that particular cat. Instead, I'd suggest laying down wire mesh or burlap netting over the garden bed. If the cats can't dig, then they will go somewhere else. It solved my problem with stray cats pooping in my planter last spring. I had tried black pepper, cayenne, citrus rinds, vinegar, citronella oil and it was a lot of wasted money. The burlap is inexpensive at the hardware store and very easy to work with. You just cut it to fit around the existing plants then tack it down with garden stakes. Plus, it helps to keep the ground moist which is an added bonus. :) Best of luck!

Try Lemon Pepper granules. You can find it in the pest control aisle at the hardware store. It's supposed to deter cats from going into your garden.

My "crazy cat" lady neighbor with the cat statue in the front yard and 3 cat houses feeds all of the stray cats. So i have had this problem for two years. i make a garden and ALL of them come poo in it. GRRRRRR! I love animals, just not stray ones in my yard all of the time. i agree. its really aggrivating.I have called animal control and had them bring me a cage sooo many times, but since she keeps cat food out all the time, we still have 25 too many stray cats in our yard. No leash law where i live, so we are too out of luck.. Seriously thinking of chicken wire, but my garden is quite big so it could get expensive. BTW, if you have children, cats that are stray and have not have shots are very dangerous if they scratch your child.
I was scratched when I was small by a stray, they thought they were going to have to give me rabies shots in my stomach for a year, but thankfully our dog brought the stray cat to us, and they tested the cat. no rabies...Be careful if they're wild cats.
