Hi Ladies,

I would like to know which games you have used at the primary level for holiday classroom parties that worked well. (I am also having two birthday parties at home soon and I would love to use the games at home too.) We can use the hallway for relay races. Last year we did relay races and dressing up in winter clothes. I like when kids get so excited about competiting/having fun with the class... BUT... I don't want to let it get to the point of crazy chaos. Do you have any creative ideas?? I'd love for you to share them with me. (We will be doing centers before the group game... a craft center, small group game like bingo, decorate your cupcake, etc...

Thanks so much,
J.

I am a first time room mom for kindergarten, and I hunted everywhere for games. We, unfortunately, have to stay in our seats and do it for 23 kids, so relay games are out. We are doing bingo, but I did run across many relay games while hunting the web:

1. Mitten candy relay. Divide into 2 teams. Give the first person on each team a pair of mittens and a tootsie roll. Give everyone in the lines a tootsie roll. When you say go, the first person in each line has to put the mittens on and unwrap the candy and put it in their mouth. Then hand the mittens to the next person in line and repeat. First team done wins.
2. Penguin race- have a ball between their legs and two teams. They need to run to line and back with the ball still intact. First team done wins.
3. Snowball race- have a styrofoam ball and they need to push it across and back using a pencil. First team done wins.
4. Kids this age love simon says, but make it frosty says (don't need the hallway for this)
5. Marshmallow game. Put a marshmallow on a spoon and they need to carry it down and put it in the bucket. Then run back and give spoon to next person. First team done wins.
6. Pin the nose on frosty. Use a blindfold and play like pin the tail on the donkey.
7. Snowball fight- make snowballs out of crumpled newspaper and have two ends. In the middle, put a tape line. Let them keep throwing the snowballs back and forth until the music stops. Then they count which team has the least amount of snowballs on their side. That team wins.

There are lots of ideas out there on the web. I am sure the party will be a huge success. Good luck!

Here's what my second graders love...
1. hot potatoe, or hot snowball

2. put winter gear on one side, they have to run and put on boots, snowpants, scarves, etc and whatever team does it first wins

3. decorate an ice cream cone upside down to make it look like a xmas tree

good luck!

My classroom kids love my holiday adaptation of "Ships & Sailors"

When you say "jingle" everyone runs to the right
When you say "bells" everyone runs to the left
When you say "Elf!" everyone has to find a partner. One partner gets on their hands and knees and the other pretends to be making a toy on their back. Anyone who doesn't get a partner is "out."
When you say "Reindeer" 3 people have to form a train and prance around like reindeer. Anyone who isn't in a group of 3 is out.
When you say "Santa's coming!" everyone has to lie down on the floor like they're sleeping. They can't move until you say "Christmas Morning." (You can call "reindeer" or something while they are sleeping and if they move they are "out.")
When you say “Christmas Morning” they have to jump up and down like they are excited.
When you say "Watch out for the Grinch!" the kids that are out can come in and tag the kids that are still "in."

Some first graders have trouble remembering the commands so sometimes I get rid of the "reindeer" or the "elf" parts.

This game can get wild so be sure to set limits!
