Well I like to watch Dr. G. She has had some odd cases where people had infection that started in bones or muscles and ended in death. And what of the possibility of a blood clot? I wouldn't ignore it if I were you.
So I messed up my finger a week to 2 weeks ago. Crazy swollen, looks like it's bruising from the inside out. Weird. Wore a finger splint for a week solid. It was feeling better, but still bruised and swollen, so I stopped wearing the splint 2 days ago.
No, I have no idea how I did this, and no, I'm not going to the doctor for them to tell me to splint it.
HOWEVER, I was kind of massaging/pressing on the seriously swollen part (the part of your finger a ring would sit on), and the swelling suddenly SQUISHED to the top part of my finger. EWWWWW!! I have never had this happen before, it's not normal swelling.
(I have had fluid under my knee caps before, when I played softball, and used to have them drained. This is different.)
So now I've got this horrifying idea in my head that it's not FLUID squishing around (I can keep moving it from top to bottom, really gross), but that it's BLOOD (since it does look like it's bruising from the inside out).
I used to be an EMT, I have nerves and a stomach of steel, but this is pretty nasty.
Think that's blood in there? Fluid? It doesn't hurt, it's just swollen... and squishy... and bruised... What is this?!
Soooo, put that splint back on then? ;)
@Aunt Mel Mel, aww thanks for asking! It's still kind of beat up, but I called to check on her at school and she's fine. The pediatrician won't see her until Thursday so the swelling will be almost completely down... I am 99% sure hers isn't broken, just banged! :)
@LiveBold, I don't have a fever, it's not some weird flesh eating bacteria ;) If it was a clot the tip of my finger and nail beds would be blue, they're not...

Any chance your family can get a standing appointment every day at the doc's office? You guys sure have a lot of weird injuries. lol
Couldn't hurt to put the splint back on.
You can't remember how you hurt it & started wearing a splint? It would help if you knew that.
I'd re-splint it.
I'm gonna vomit....
It doesn't sound good, really it doesn't.
I vote fluid not blood. I also think a trip to the doctor's is in order. If it grosses you out with your background, then that raises the concern bar a tad in my opinion. I am all for home fixes but there is a reason you have doctors and nurses. If you have a nurse hotline through your insurance or local emergency clinic, then that would be another intermediate option.
Put the splint back on it...
I'm not a person who can deal with that...I'd be at the doctors...even though I know they'd just say splint it. I'm almost got sick just reading it.
How's your daughters hand?
It sounds like you now have an infection in your finger. You really should have it checked. There could be broken pieces of bone in your finger and that would cause an infection. They could at least drain it or do an x-ray to find out for sure.
Secondary osteoarthritis
most likely caused by injury to your finger, you might have misplaced the fluid pocket that we surrounding the flanges joints. This will probably require a trip to the Orthopedic specialist if you cant shake the pain, or the squishyness doesnt go away. It might be a Subcutaneous Cyst from the injury. Your not as young as you used to be. I think the worst that comes of this, is that you get some arthritis in the finger.
So if it were your child's finger you would what??? I suspect take her to the doctor. Treat yourself as well as you do your children.
Actually, unless you are describing a bleeding gaping wound or a bone sticking out of the skin, it sounds pretty cool. LOL
I would probably get the doctor to take a look at it though. Our bodies can do some weird stuff over nothing sometimes, but sometimes there is more to it than we know.
I was bitten by a regular old (well, it was HUGE) horse-fly last summer, on a Friday. On the back of my ankle just below the calf(not on my heel). It really hurt. By the next morning, it had swelled and turned red in such a big area that I started marking it with a sharpie. Then it started to blister. Eventually growing to the size of a 50cent piece. GROSS. I called my SIL (nurse) and she asked for some particular details and told me what to watch for. It didn't improve much over the rest of the weekend... so I went to the doc that Monday morning.
I was worried about infection, but it wasn't. Just a nasty bite that I had some sort of allergic reaction to that particular one's saliva or whatever.
Took a while to heal. But never had anything like that arise from a simple horse-fly bite in my life.
You just never know.
I'd want to talk to the doctor just so I knew what it was! Whether it was dangerous or not would almost be beside the point.
ETA: I couldn't think of the name of it when I originally responded. But one of your later post-ers did. My SIL (the nurse) was querying me on my bug bite issue, and was looking for signs of cellulitis. That can be pretty bad, I believe. If that is what you have, you need to be seen. Please let the doctor look at it.
I saw the pic on FB - like your other friend said - cellulitis.
Since you don't have a fever - I don't think it's a staff infection.

I'm not a doc - but looking at the FB pic and the "squish" I would say celluitis.
Go to the Dr. It could be an abscess forming and you don't want the infection going systemic or into the bone. It's been 2 weeks-it should be healing by now, not getting worse.
Good luck!
Sorry, but please take yourself to the doctor. You don't want to lose your finger over under treating it. Get a professional to look at it!
