Groin Pain 2 Years After Giving Birth

I would like to hear from anyone who has had severe groin pain for years after giving birth.
I have 3 kids and I experienced a certain amount of pain after each birth. After having my first child, my tailbone hurt for close to a year. Eventually this and other discomforts subsided with both my 1st and 2nd. Every since giving birth to my 3rd child, I have had pain in the groin of my left leg. Right after she was born it was really weird because my leg didn't seem to work right. For instance if I was lying on the bed with my knees up I could turn a certain way and my leg would just flop to the side and I wouldn't be able to lift it up without using my hand. Likewise if I was sitting on the edge of the bed and wanted to lie down, I couldn't lift my leg on the bed. I would have to physically lift it up with my hands. Also it would hurt to stretch it even a little bit. I never said anything to my ob gyns because when I would complain about my tailbone hurting with my first they would just say that it will get better over time. And eventually it did. Well my daughter just turned 2 and my leg still hurts. It is better, I no longer have to lift it, but it hurts a lot. I had an annual exam recently and mentioned to the ob gyn and basically she said that any pain associated with childbirth should get better within 6 weeks. She offered to give me a referral to an orthopedic surgeon. Needless to say I'm a bit annoyed by this response. My groin didn't hurt before I had my daughter and now it does.
My question is if anyone has had similar pain, what did you do about it? I was hoping there were some stretches or strength exercises I could do to make it better.

What can I do next?

Ah sounds like pelvic floor issues. I don't think it is a torn ligament but have your dr. check it out since I am not an expert :) I had to have pelvic floor physical therapy...did wonders...Helps strengthen abdominal...vaginal, and glute muscles which in turn help the legs etc...The muscles are connected together. childbirth can definitely cause these issues.

I had a pain in my groin as well; actually, more like my lower left abdominal area, after giving birth to my 4th child.

It went away once I started focusing more on exercising and eliminating stress. But, it was there for a good 2.5 years!

Well, this isn't the exact same situation, but recently my husband tore a ligament (playing rugby, which is only slightly less traumatic than childbirth LOL), and the symptoms were quite similar to what you describe. He went to an orthopedic surgeon, who did an MRI and CT scan to determine the extent of the damage. The doctor determined that my husband needed surgery to re-attach the ligament. It took about 6 weeks for him to recover after the surgery to where he could walk without crutches. But he is good as new now! I would agree with your OB/GYN's assessment that you should go to the orthopedic surgeon. If it hasn't healed in 2 years, then it's not going to heal on its own and you should get it checked out. Why keep suffering when you can find out what's going on and fix it?

I had pelvic pain after both of my children and went to a chiropractor who said my bones were out of alignment from delivering. He corrected the problem and the pain never returned.

Hi, I see this ? Was posted three years ago but it is the closest post I have ever found to what I am going thru!!! I to remember having to pull my leg over. Like it was stuck or twisted that has since gone away (about 6 months after my 3rd child) but the sharp shooting pains, achy constant pains and the feeling my leg will give out is constant. Went thru pt for 6 months - no relief. Chiro helps a little. I am depressed by it. Has been going on for two years. I feel like people think it's in my head.. Doctor is no help. Have you found anything that helps or even a diagnoses?

I would go to the orthopedic surgeon to rule out an injury such as a torn ligament first, if everything seems ok, I would go to a chiropractor...not a chiropractor that only works on people's backs, preferably a sports medicine chiropractor that works on extremities and has e stim, does physical therapy, has cool laser, and is a certified in strength and conditioning. They can truly work wonders, and it could just be a matter of something being out of alignment. Good luck!

Have you thought about trying a chiropractor? It's possible that your hips are out of alignment and that certainly would be understandable and could cause they type of problem you are having. As Chelley posted, stress can be an underlying cause as well.

My recommendation would be a visit to your Primary Care physician or OB/GYN first. It may be completely unrelated to muscles, ligaments, etc.

If they do an X-Ray, CT scan, MRI and then find nothing, you may be able to find some comfort seeing a chiropractor, acupuncturist, etc.

There are many reasons why your left groin, specifically is hurting, and since few of us have medical background, we're all really speculating as to what it may be.

Good luck. I hope you find some resolution soon.
