Grilling for the First Time

Updated on July 05, 2013

I bought my first gas grill this week, never had one before and it was my first time cooking on it. I wrapped my corn and potatoes in foil and set them on the top rack and placed my meats on the bottom. Well, the meats cooked, but the veggies didn't. Any advice as to timing, etc. Any grilling recipes or tricks you can share, please do! I appreciate it:)

Thank you:)

I put potatoes on for an hr before meats. Whole potatoes each wrapped in foil and put them on half of the grill on med low and let em go about 20 minutes later put whole ears of corn with the husks still on silks out each wrapped in foil on the top rack. Soak the corn in water so tbr husks don't burn totally. And let em go. About s half hr later check potatoes n once they are done I move to top rack and turn all burners on med low n put the meats on

I like cut potatoes into quarters, season them, toss a few pieces of bacon in with them, a splash of beer, and grill for about 45 to an hour I the bottom rack.

Stab them with a fork... I usually stab right through the tin foil to check them. When they feel somewhat soft, but don't quite slide off the fork, I move them to the top and add the meat. That let's the potatoes finish cooking with the meat. Then I add cheese to the potatoes while the meat rests when finished cooking.

We grill our corn like Galwaygirl and it comes out perfect every time. LOVE it that way.

Congrats on the grill.. you will get used to cooking on it and be a pro in no time. It is just an adjustment of cooking times, etc.

We grill a lot of steaks... no seasonings or marinade.. I buy them from my local butcher and they come from the same place the high end restaurants get their steaks that they sell for $50 each. I do pay about $12-$15 per steak, depending on the cut.

I am trying my hand at the grilled veggies tonight. My plan is to put them on aluminum foil and roast slowly then drizzle with balsamic vinegar.

Enjoy!

Veggies are denser than meat so they can take twice as long if not longer. It's like when you cook a roast in the crock pot. You have to put the potatoes and carrots and stuff in at the same time as the meat or they don't get done.

If you google grilling recipes I bet you can find some sort of chart out there that will tell you at what intervals to put the different things on the grill to have them done at the same time.

But all in all I think the veggies need at least double the time the meat does.

M., I have never tried potatoes. However we do corn on the grill a lot. This is the way we do it:
Soak UNHUSKED corn cobs in a large container of water for about 30 min.
Set wet corn cobs on bottom rack of grill, at medium heat. Close the grill lid and let em cook, turning about every 10-15 min until the husks are brown-black but not burned all the way through. This cooks the corn and gives it a wonderful smoked flavor. Remove the cobs and let them cool about 15 min before removing the husks. The husks will come off easily but best do this over a pan or a bowl as it is a bit messy with the charred bits.
Did your grill come with an instruction pamphlet/recipe book with grill times and temps?

Try a skewer! And also try par-boiling some of the harder veggies (like onions and peppers). It will cut the cook time down significantly.

Grills aren't magic. You have to look at the cooking times and temperatures of everything you cook. Potatoes take one hour at 350 so you have to have them on the grill for an hour. So you can do 55 minutes them move them up to the top rack to start grilling the meat.

I think corn is ten but I can't remember off hand since my husband does all the grilling. Peal back the husks, remove the hair, close them and grill them on the grill with the husks still one. If you need the room move them up to the top rack when you start grilling the meat.
