My Grandaughter is in the 2nd grade, reads at about a third grade level. She LOVED Charlotte's Web, read the whole thing in two nights. I bought her Little House in the Big Woods and Little House on the Prarie. WRONG GRANNY! She didn't want to hurt my feelings but Mom (my daughter) let me know, my Grandaughter said it was too much "reality"!! All they do is look for food! We had a laugh about that. Sooooo, anyone have suggestions on something a bit more fantasy, or something like Charlotte's Web? Thanks for any suggestions.

What can I do next?

I loved the Wizard of OZ books at this age. After the first book there are about 42 in the series but the first 14 are usually easy to find in paperbacks. L. Frank Baum is the author of the first 14, the authors change twice I think, after that.

you could go here (put in parent)
http://www.arbookfind.com/advanced.aspx

and then in the section "ATOS Book Level " put in 3.0 - 3.5 (or whatever range she reads at) (and you have to enter in the field above it the interest level, I put middle grades)

I tried looking under adventure and was thinking I didn't see anything that would appeal to my daughter until I found the title "Fashion Kitty Versus the Fashion Queen"

{Her November report card should have her reading level, and Charlotte's Web is rated 4.4 (4th grade 4th month) so it sounds like she could be above 3rd grade}

George's Marvelous Medicine
by Roald DahlI think this book is really funny. Gave me a great laugh. 4.5/5 stars. It could have been better if it were a bit longer.

The Tale of Despereaux: Being the Story of a Mouse, a Princess, Some Soup and a Spool of Thread
by Kate Dicamillo, Timothy Basil Ering (Illustrator)
Despereaux, a mouse, is sentenced to the dungeon for falling in love with the human princess who lives in the castle. The leaders of the mouse council, the leaders of all the mice which includes Despereaux's father sentence him to the dungeons for years on end. Because of the rats who live in the dungeon all of the mice expect him to die. Gregory the prisoner saves him from his destined death. Despereaux is a small mouse, who lives in a palace and is the last of the Tilling’s, but he is different then most of the mice. He is very interested in reading. Once when he was going to get some food, he met the princes and the king. Now having people see mice is against the rules, and it just so happened that his brother saw him talking to the king and princess, so his brother reported him to the head mouse, who had him taken to the dungeon. by William

Double Fudge
by Judy Blume
I really liked this book because it's really funny.

Fudge-a-mania
Super Fudge
both by Judy Blume

Hope those help.

My dughter read Mathilda by Roald Dahl in 2nd grade and loved it. She was also an advanced reader. Any of the Roald Dahl childrens books are great. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, The Witches and Georges Marvelous Medicine were some of her all time favorites. The Lemony Snickets series was also a favorite of hers. Hope this helps.

My girls also really liked the Tale of Despereaux (sp?)as well as other books by Kate DiCamillo. My younger daughter really liked the Amber Brown series at that age (Amber Brown is NOT a Crayon, etc.). I'm not sure of the reading level, but the Peter and The Starcatchers series is a big hit around here too. The latest in the series just came out a few months ago and my 6th grader HAD to read it even though it is below her current reading level. I've even read them all! My last suggestion is The Mixed Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankwiler (not sure the author). Very funny, full of plot twists and a little mystery too.

Hmm. I wonder if it was the fact that it is historical and old-fashioned that didn't appeal. My daughter loved Charlette's Web, but also loves the Little House series.

How about the Chronicles of Narnia? Maybe float it past your daughter first, since it does have fighting. But if your granddaughter has seen any of the movies, I would say that series is sure to be a big hit.

Hi D.,

Don't beat yourself up about it. Kids survive reality and they introduce those books in fourth grade.

My daughter is in first and loves the magic tree house books, she too is very advanced. You can also get the other 2 E. B. White books "Stuart Little" and "The Trumpet Swan".
