Graduation Announcements - Lewisville,TX

Has anyone ever made their own Graduation Announcements? My daughter finished High School a semester early (in January). She originally didn't want to go through the ceremony in June but has now changed her mind. We won't be sending out many announcements, just to immediate family, maybe a couple of friends. I don't want to spend a lot of money on these and would like to just order cap and gown and do our own announcements. Thoughts? Would this be "tacky"?

What can I do next?

I was at Office Max locally a week ago, and saw a whole stand that had various invites and announcements you could buy. They must have been some sort of "program friendly" easy to do thing. They had them for BBQ's, family reuinions, graduations and grad open houses , and a few other summer friendly events. Some were super cute!

I was lingering over the grad open house ones myself as my daughter graduates in June. I have only found one design we like for her open house invites and they are sorta spendy, so I have been seeking alternatives!

Thanks for the reminder to bring her up there with me to look at those options!

I am also going to look at places like Walgreens photo cards (I do my Christmas photo cards there each year), simple, easy and inexpensive..so want to see if that might be an easy option as well??

Good luck!

You can get them made up at any copy shop, as mentioned. Be aware that most people will see an announcement as a request for a gift, whereas a party invitation is at least giving them some refreshments if they come and bring a gift. If you are enclosing a school picture, that's a little more personal. If you are sending them to close family and friends, these people will already know that she has graduated so they'll assume, as I said, that you're looking for a gift for her. If your family would be giving her a gift anyway, then the announcement is a nice touch, but if it's not their custom, it might look tacky (which is, I think, where your comment comes from).

I don't think it's tacky at all. I make my own announcements/invitations. Sometimes I make them in MS Publisher and have them printed and sometimes I use Heritage Makers. It's nice making your own b/c you can do whatever you want on them, and say whatever you want.

Dear J.,

I think people even prefer personalized ones v. mass ordered ones... Anyway, I have made announcements for my kids on photo paper and attach a picture of them in their cap and gown and write also about what their plans are after graduation. They look really nice and people get an update on your kid. You can put cool borders, etc. You can buy envelopes at office depot or any other office supply store. They also sell cap and gown return/address labels, stickers to close the envelope, etc. Sometimes I have sent them by themselves and sometimes along with the school version of the announcement. Either way they add a personal touch. Best wishes and God Bless!

We never did the announcements for high school graduation. I suppose if I had I would have done them myself.

All you need is some good paper stock, you can get that at any office supply store. I actually know someone who scanned the sample that was sent out and then printed it. That to me is tacky but maybe just me.

Anyway just go crazy, you can find a friend with good photo editing software and take a picture of her in her cap and gown. There are so many good effects software can do. Put her pic on the front with the info and go from there. So long as you stay creative it is not tacky.

I've had a lot of differant invitations made up at Kinkos or Minuteman press. They have books to choose styles from. They can be as ornate or simple as you want. They always come out beautiful and she will stand out from the crowd!

Not tacky at all! I made my own when our son graduated and they looked just fine. Find a nice paper stock and design away. It can be simple using a pretty font on the computer, or if your daughter is artistic possible she can draw something to put on them. I think that would be more personal and really lovely!

For the next graduation we did as the poster before suggested. We used photos to make a collage announcement.

It can be done and even look like you spent a lot.

Use quality paper and a very nice font. Then adding some professional touches like decorations and pictures are nice too. Have a nice professional head shot done and then copy your favorite on your color printer if you have one. Use photo paper to make them look good.

If you don't have the option of doing photo's at home you can order them from the photographer but that is an expensive way of doing them. I have heard of a mom taking a photo with a regular digital camera then taking it to someplace like Walmart and printing it off on the little kiosk thing by the camera displays.

No it would not be tacky! Very smart:) in my opinion the ones they order at school are ugly and over priced. Especially with all the adorable paper/craft store paper options out there you could make something really cute! When I graduated from college my friend and I both hated the formal ones so we went to a cute invitations store in town, picked out very cute paper and printed some up. Everyone that got them in the mail loved the idea. You could even go on a website like Tinyprints and create a card that has pictures from her senior year as part of the invite. Be creative and think outside the box,... More fun that way! Not tacky, promise!

Another thought is Shuttetfly. They have all different styles and prices. And you can usually find coupon codes for shipping or a percentage off. I think their prices are pretty reasonable too. Good luck and congrats to your daughter!!
