Anyone own or know of an excellent lightweight bagless vacuum cleaner? We have a small apt with wall to wall high pile carpet and one room with hard woods. Would love it to work for both and have really good suction. My hair is still falling out from the pregnancy and is everywhere. The last vacuum we had broke b/c of the large amount of thick hair stuck in the rollers. I was looking at Cordless Stick Vacs b/c it's hard to find an available outlet but I've read that they don't work so well on carpets. Thanks Mama's....

What can I do next?

I swear by my Dyson. I love this thing, it is great. It does wonders on the carpet and with the push of a button is goes brushless for wood floors. It is bag less so the clean up is so easy, it is light weight and so convenient to use. The attachments stay on board so are right there if you need them and are simple to attach. I can't say enough good things about this vacuum, it is easy to carry up stairs as well. Look into and see if it will fit your needs, you won't be disappointed. :)

I have a Hoover Whisper and I love it. I did as much research as I could online and there were lots of positive reviews about this one. It has a strong suction and easy to maintain. Some of the vacuums require you to buy new filters, special coded numbered branded filters that I imagine could become hard to get in the future. This one requires nothing more to be purchased ever! There is a spongy filter thingy that you clean yourself every 3 months, I think it says. I clean mine more often because I use it a lot! I use it on my carpet and my hardwood floors. It works great. We have 3 long haired females in our house and hair does get caught in the rollers but I just cut it out every few times I use it and there's been no problem. I can't say that it's lightweight, although it's lighter than my mum and sister's vacuums but I was willing to sacrifice that for the other important qualities that make me so pleased with this vacuum. I had to order this vacuum from Walmart online. I don't know why they don't sell the best vacuums in stores (at least around here, we seem to have very limited choices), but they don't seem to. My friend who is a professional cleaner said none of those are any good. Many of them have really cheap breakable pieces or other negatives. Mine came to Walmart very shortly after I ordered it and I picked it up. It was all very easy and smooth. Oh and I really liked the way it opens on the bottom to empty the canister. Many of the vacuums I looked at had the opening on top and you had to turn it upside down to open it. Hello?! Who designed that? I place a garbage bag under this one and pull the release and it's done. It's a lot less messy if you ask me. I do try to keep the vacuum fairly "clean". It's a dirty job cleaning a vacuum but it works best when it's not all clogged up with caked on dust. I hope it will ensure it works better and lasts longer. Well! Can't believe I have that much to say about a vacuum! Welcome to motherhood and middle age! Yikes. This is a little different to what my priorities were some years ago! Hahaha. Good luck and, if you get it, let me know if you are as happy with it as I am.

Over the years, I have found the best solution is to just get the cheapy vacuum at your local walmart for like $50.00 and I change the bag every time I use it and then get a new one every year. Several friends have purchased the high dollar ones and they all loose suction after a few years and so i personally do no think they are worth the investment. Some of my vacuums have gone 1.5 years to 2 before I noticed the suction was gone. Mine work on both hardwood and carpet, but on hard wood, it isn't perfect, but gets it clean enough so that i can then use my duster or damp mop without a mess. Best of luck. Oh & i have never found a cordless to be able to match a plug in unit!

I just got a Bissell Powerforce for $46 at Walmart and it was the best investment I have made. It is bagless and very easy to empty. Also, you can wash its filter. I noticed it's now $39.99 online. It picks up really good, so you have to make sure that you hold your curtains up off the floor or it will suck them right in. Had a Hoover widepath and I would not recommend that one, because it doesn't pick up too good and the hose is way too short and I had to replace the switch at 1 1/2 years. My older Hoovers were great! They still work but the body rusted out on the canister and the casing broke and the pin rusted out on the upright....Another words, the older Hoovers out lasted their bodies and were really good.

I would suggest typing "vacuum" in the search feature on mamapedia. Lots of questions about which one to purchase and great recommendations. I vote Dyson Ball hands down. You will NEVER regret the purchase or money spent. You get what you pay for. Dyson has a lightweight version, what we have, and it does a great job keeping up with 3000sq ft, stairs, hardwood, carpet, etc.
