I have always bought liquid Tide for my family's laundry. It does a great job but is a bit expensive.. But now that I seem to do enough laundry for an army.. and I quit my job to stay home with the 2 kids... I was wondering if anyone had good experiences with another brand of laundry detergent... A cheaper brand that is great at getting out kid dirt.. The kids are little- so right now it is most spilled food taht I need to get out of clothes..

What can I do next?

Hi Lisa,

We just went from Tide (with no dyes) to All Free & Clear. We like it so far. Hope that helps!

I use either ALL free and clear/ Arm and Hamor Free and Clear or the Meijer brand. All work well and are inexpensive.

For tough stains, you need to use Shout or another pre-treating stain remover. I've found that Era cleans just as well as Tide and it costs less.

Growing up with my mom using Tide, I too, also used it. It is a little on the expensive side, and since I now do two loads everday (I am married with five kids) I switched a few years back to the "Ultra" Kirkland brand sold at Costco. I have never had a problem with it not getting stains out. As with any set it stain, I pre-treat and soak first, but I am extremely happy with the Kirkland brand. I usually get about 120 washloads from it, and it sells for $9.99. It works great with my HE washer. Hope this helps!

I also use the All Free and Clear. To pretreat stains, I use Zout - for me it works way better than Shout. The only places I seem to find Zout is in grocery stores. Hope this helps.

I use shout triple action to pretreat and I don't have to worry about what detergent that I buy. I usually get All Small and Mighty without scent or color.

Because I have sensitive skin, we've used Arm&Hammer, sometimes with bleach, sometimes with softener, sometimes not. I also have thrown in OxiClean. For nasty stains, I either use a pretreat stick or an OxyClean soak. Both are non-irritating.

I like Sun with bleach. It smells wonderful and gets most of my stains out. It is about 6.50 for the 300load size. I switched to this after trying many, many brands also for cost saving reasons. I have very sensitive skin and so does my partner, Sun seems to work well for both of us... the regular with bleach in the white container not the one in the purple. I didn't like the purple one. For tough stains I like to pre treat with Totally Toddler.. that stuff gets everything out!!
Good luck!

You have to pretreat it if course with shout or stain stick or whatever, but I use Dynamo. You can get the big bottles at Meijer every few weeks for buy 1 get 2 free ($12.00 for the first bottle, I think). I have triplets and 2 have exema (no I can't spell) and it doesn't really bother them at all. Good luck.

I've always found that the cheap laundry detergent works well...and I just spray food stains with the oxi clean spray n wash stuff!! If you pre-treat tough stains...I've had no problem with whatever's cheapest...Purell...All....and a few other random brands. I mostly use Purell though. Good Luck!

Not sure if you are a member of Costco or not, but I will tell you that buying the Kirkland liquid detergent in bulk is definately the way to go. Consumer Reports also rated it the best and it is WAY cheaper than Tide. On a personal level, I think it works great!

Hi Lisa,

I am a mother of two my son is 9 years old and my daughter is 4 months, I use gain apple mango tango to wash our clothes and it works great and is not that expensive. I do wash my daughter's clothes in dreft which is expensive but it last a long time (2 months), because she is the only one using it and her clothes are small. I hope this helps you.

Well - I personally cannot use tide at all I break out in a rash - I go to http://lochenski.qhealthzone.com to purchase my products, The products are shipped in a concentrated form so you have to read the directions, but for stains I use LOC and I use the SA8 detergent with fabric softener. I have never had a problem with this detergent. Oh, if you check out the website you have to select other from the menu at the top, then go to home products. I've been using these products since the 70's.

Good luck with your search!

Hi I personally uses ALL free clear. My husband and boys both have senative skin so I can't have anything with a smell to it. But my suggestion would be to uses Shout. I love by it. I get it in the bigger container cuz it's cheaper over the land haul and I mean I had stains on clothes from a long weekend away from home and was able to get them out. Good luck! D.

Purex!!! It's cheap to begin with, and they run coupons too. My mom uses all free & clear, and she likes that pretty well too.

I pretreat my child's clothes with Shout and then I use Arm and Hammar detergent. The Shout pretreater works great even if I don't treat the clothes for a few a days the stains almost always come out.
