My daughter is almost 3 and is potty training she is doing well but she is not pooping. I know this is normal and she has gone on the potty at least twice but now it seems like she is holding it. I have been giving her apples and apple juice which normally works for her. But now it is not. I don't want to have to do supositories or enimas, so what else can I give her? I know prunes and fiber, but she hates prunes and and she has plenty of fiber in her diet. I need something that will really get her going so that she will not have a choice but to get to the bathroom and go easliy. She does try to go but then gives up really easily. So please help it has been since monday I think since her last bm. Thank you!!

What can I do next?

Miralax does work great but I don't recommend it in children. We use this for patient's that have been on chemo. I recommend using 1 tsp of Milk of Mag - my son went through this when he was potty training and we never had to go higher than 1 tsp. It worked well.

Hello F.,

pears are great. in my opinion pears work better than prunes because you don't get all the extra gas prunes/juice can give you.

Also extra vitamin C can help with bm's.
I thought apple juice can be constipating to some people.
Make sure she's getting enough magnesium. Good luck! ~C.~

Make sure you use apple juice vs. just apples or applesauce. I read that the applesauce can actually be binding. Karo (corn) syrup works, which is probably why sweets work too. My husband swears that it's the sugar that keeps him regular (a whole different issue). My friend swears by oatmeal - not sure how that plays out.

Our gastroenterologist told me this:
1 tsp of mineral oil 1-2 times dailt till she has passed the blockage-if you see what looks like beer pass reduce by half.
Then use pro-biotics- or yogurt- and foods high in fiber oatmeal, apples, pears. Fiber helps regulate the digestive track and is therefore good for both diareah and constipation. If there is too much liquid it absorbs it if not enough the work it takes to break it down generates some and send things on there way.
You don't want to give to much sugar as it just causes loose bile around the stool and can cause cyclic direah and constipation if there is not a blockage.
Hydration is also important.

Not sure this will help for your current issue of her not going for four days, but as a maintenance I give my kids Fish Oils; the Nordic Naturals has a chewable soft gel and this keeps them regular--they take four of the tiny gels per day as directed on bottle. I take fish oils too and can tell when I have not taken it.

Miralax - over the counter. It works great and helps soften it.

Apple prune juice works really well for my 2 1/2 year old and it tastes just like apple juice so she will probably like it. If you REALLY want her to go try pear juice...be ready it works really well. Good luck with potty training.

i think you may have better luck with raisins and/or grapes.

Whatever you do, I don't recommend an enema. If you damage the colon in any way, it can cause horrible infections and very bad complications that often lead to hospitalization.

It isn't a home remedy, but try Miralax. It isn't harmful to the body in any way and you can give it to your child everyday for as long as you need to. It softens stool and makes it impossible not to go. If your daughter is holding it, you better not let it go untreated as it can lead to problems. I just spoke with my son's pedi about the same problem today.

Chocolate does the trick with my little one... not that I give him tons of candy any way... but when he hasn't pooped in awhile, I'll give him some chocolate and sure enough, he goes...

My little girl had issues with constipation a while ago. Her pediatrician gave me two suggestions that worked. The first is yogurt. My favorite brand is YoBaby; its all natural, non-homogenized (which means the cream settles at the top) and has six strains of live active cultures which are great for digestion. The other thing is Flax Oil. I get mine at Spouts in the refrigerated supplements area. Be careful when buying flax oil because some brands mix other things in with it. I give my 1 year old two teaspoons with her cereal or mixed in with her milk. Since your daughter is 3 you could give her more.

The same thing happened with my 2 1/2 yr old...I asked on here what to do and some of the advice was...

oranges and let your daughter dip them in sugar
any kind of sugary juice
prunes
green grapes

what worked on my daughter was prunes (the ones individually wrapped made her think it was candy) and peel and cut up an orange and let her dip it in sugar. she wouldn't drink juice because I've always deluted half water half juice or have given her those crystal light things with water.

Good luck...

My niece had this problem and her pediatrician told her to eat a fresh pear everyday. My sister now swears by it and so do I. I give my daughter one every day as a snack and we rarely have any problems. Plus, I can really tell a difference if she misses her pear even one day. Hope that helps!
