What can I do next?

I have bought so many books from library book sales (usually sales are in the basement). I would just call up any library you are willing to travel to (or check websites).

The YMCA's once or twice a year have huge book sales (prices are better at the library sales though). Call them or check website.

You may also want to choose a local school to contact. The schools get money for selling Scholastic. They may let you purchase through them (you have to prepay, so I don't see that there would be problems...if your church has a school they probably do this and would let you contribute). If not try the nearest Catholic grade school.

I can't remember the last time I bought a book from a real store.

Amazon.com sells books used for a discount.

also try your local Craigslist.com. sometimes there will be free ones too. you can make a post requesting books as well.

you may try organizing a book swap at your local church or some other community group. My daughter's school is doing this. you bring your books during a certain period of time and are given tickets for each book. then during the swap you can take as many books as you have tickets.

I think the best places to find reasonably priced books for children are yard sales. This is the start of the season, check the paper and head out to one of the neighboorhood sales (the ones whre everyone participates), it makes it alot of fun to walk and wander.

Hi K.,

I go to the Goodwill stores and purchase gently used and brand new books for my kids. I think the prices range from 10 cents to about 1 dollar. Good Luck.

Hi K., I love books also and I totally agree with how they can get exspensive. I have four kids so I am always looking to find ways to cut cost and one thing I found is at garage sales you can find like new books for really cheap and since garage sale season is just arriving you are in luck! Usually you can get books from 10 to 25 cents a piece. Sometimes really nice books will be like 50 cents but always well worth it. I always make sure to take a look inside to make sure they are in good condition. But most of the time the books look like they were barely even opened. You can also check out e-bay but shipping gets exspensive so I would try garage sales besides who knows what else you might find. Good luck.

Hi K.,

The Scholastic Warehouse sale is coming up at the Fenton MO location. Most books are 50% off. They also have some software and other "toy" items at 50% off. I found out about these sales through my school. The sales in May and December are great, but the others have a pretty limited selection. There is usually a section for board books, and you'll enjoy these sales for years to come.

Here's the link. Get directions from Mapquest as it's a little confusing to find. It is best to print off a fast cart pass, then you even get a coupon for $10 if you spend $50. As your son is 1, you can put in that you homeschool. The first years are so fun!

Good Luck!

There are three used book stores in St. Charles. Children's books are as low as $.25. Also, garage sales are a good place to stock up.
