Recently, I posted a question asking about shipoos and cockapoos. Thanks for the great tips. I really want a poodle mix. Can anyone give me any info about what goldendoodles are like. Are they the great pets that I hear they are? Do they shed?

Thank you

What can I do next?

Half of all Goldendoodles shed and half do not because the Golden Retriever's shedding gene is neither dominant nor recessive. There is no way to tell as a puppy whether they will shed, because puppies do not lose their "puppy coat" until they are 6-12 months old. This is one of the major reasons why there are so many Goldendoodles in rescues across the country. Our local Golden rescue had 4 the last time I checked - and all four shed.

Why not just a poodle? They're very smart and don't shed "much." All dogs shed some. And please don't pay for a poodle mix (or a poodle for that matter). A mix is a mutt and shouldn't cost a fortune.

Great dogs, but they are also very energetic and need daily walks and a lot of attention.

Goldendoodles can really vary. Some are crossed with a miniutre poodle and some a standard, depends on the size of the golden as well which depending on the breeder can go from about 45 pounds to 80 plus. They can be wonderful dogs and will have a lot of energy! Some are going to shed more and some less, goldens shed! Sometimes you can can get a second or thrid generation one, where they are crossing goldendoodles with goldendooles and you may have one that sheds less. Compared to the other two mixes you mentioned the goldendoodle is going to be a good bit bigger and have a ton more energy, any of them can shed, the goldendoodle probably the most and it can be a lot! They are all also going to require grooming most likely. At the same time they make wonderful family pets and are usually great with kids! If you are interested in rescue, many many rescue groups are going to have poodle crosses in them. If you go the breeder route, make sure the parents have still had the health checks recommended for their breeds, many websites will have that information and research each breed. Check out some poodles too maybe and Portuguese water dogs may be another breed you may be interested in. Good luck in your search for your new family member, dogs are wonderful additions!

My sister has one and he is HUGE. Much larger than she expected based on his parent's sizes. He's very sweet and fun and great with the kids. He doesn't shed much at all and is very well behaved. She said he was super easy to train.

We have a 5 yr. old male goldendoodle. BEST dog we've ever had. We've had purebreds, mutts, pound puppies, and he's the best. His is big at 95 lbs., but he is a "gentle giant". But I like big dogs; they don't seem to be as high strung as little dogs. As for the high energy that others have mentioned, ours really likes to lay around a lot! Very smart, obedient without any formal training, GREAT with kids of all ages-not an aggressive bone in his body. He doesn't really "shed" in that his hair doesn't get on clothing, furniture, etc. I do find hair balls that have drifted into the corners where we have hard tile. His parents were a golden and a poodle, and his hair is more on the wavy golden side rather than curly poodle side. He does require regular, professional grooming.

From what I have learned on Animal Planet, there is no such thing as a hypo-allergenic dog, nor one that does not shed, (some, that is, all creatures with hair, lose it)
Go to Animal Planets website and click on Dogs 101...that is the greatest show as far as what you need for your family. They did a Dog 101 with all the new popuar "mixed" breeds...such a labradoodles, cockapoos and chiweenies.
