Going to the Bathroom Too Often and When Does the Night Time Diaper End?

My almost 4 years has been potty trained since about age 3 1/2. He still wears a diaper at night. Every morning the diaper is full even though I stop the liquids after dinner. How much longer will he be in diapers? When should I be concerned? How do I get him to stop peeing in the diaper at night?

Also, for the past 3-4 days, he is obessed with going to the bathroom about every 20 minutes. I don't know if he is doing it for attention. Why now? There are no other symptoms. He doesn't have any pain, etc. Should I take him to the doctor? Help!

What can I do next?

My daughter did not stop wearing a pull up to bed at night until she was 4 1/2. She was potty trained several months before turning 3 and would nap without a pull up - but needed them at night. I asked the pediatrician several times and she always assured me that it was a biological issue - many children's bladders are just not large enough to go all night and if they're a sound sleeper (which my daughter is) then they won't wake up. I was going to start waking her up to go when I was up nursing babies when she was 4 but the pediatrician assured me I wouldn't be teaching her anything it was biological. So I didn't...

You do not "get him to stop" peeing in the diaper at night. It is a muscle in the body that controls night time pee control. Some kids develop the control early, some don't until much later. I believe the average age is around 6. My son is a little over 5 and is starting to have regularly dry sleep pants. I congratulate him but don't make a big deal over wet ones. Don't worry and don't make a big deal out of it. If you've been focusing on the dry nights too much, he may be getting overly focused on it and peeing a lot. See what happens if you don't put any focus on his potty behavior. You can ask your pedi if you're nervous, just to help yourself not worry.

Sorry, If he wears a diaper at night he isn't potty trained. As long as he wears a diaper to bed he will wet it because it's easier. Get extra sheets and a waterproof mattress protector. Put him to bed in underwear and remind him he will have to get up if he needs to potty.

You might be making too big a deal about his potty training and now he is nervous. Possibly he doesn't want to disappoint you and so runs to the bathroom frequently. Please know that boys in particular can easily be 8 or 9 years old before they have night control. Try to take that in your stride. It is out of his control and you wouldn't want to make him feel bad. Switch him to pull ups so that he doesn't feel babyish and let him know it is not a problem.

Talk to your pediatrician on your next regular visit just to confirm that is what is going on.

I am not an expert on this by any means having only one potty trained child thus far but I have recently read a lot of potty training books. The books say to tackle night time at the same time as you are training during the day. It's the same feeling and same response night or day. It does say that some children are sound sleepers and that you may need to wake them up at night to remind them to go pee. Try waking him up before you go to bed and then you will know if he is peeing early or later in the night to know what to do next time. I have never heard of a child being 8 or 9 before they sleep thru the night without diapers.
For the daytime thing I would worry about urinary tract infection but that will be up to you to decide if it's medical or he thinks it's fun or what's going on.
Good luck
