Hi Mamas!
My husband had a health scare a couple weeks ago and was in the hospital for a week and had to get emergency surgery. I have been a SAHM for years, I have worked part-time as a sub-teacher and looooove it!! I recieved my Bachelor of Business in 2006, but have not "utilized" it yet! I have three boys 8, 3, and 6 months. I am thinking about getting my teaching certificate. I want to be able to support my kids if anything was to happen to my husband. I am looking for some advice and if anyone can give me some info. about differnt colleges in the south west illinois area. Also, when I was going to school before, I only had one child, is having three children, a lot harder? I just want to know if I should go full or part-time? PS. My husband suports me right now, but I haven't started and he hasn't had to "step-up" as far as caring for our kids, housework, etc.

Isn't Northern supposed to be a good education school? When I was in school ( in the dark ages, 1984) the kids in HS who wanted to be teachers went to Northern or ISU.
Southern also offers many classes online, it would be quite a haul going to Carbondale from Ottawa. Northern's in DeKalb, ISU is in Normal, both about an hour or less from you.
Good luck to you and I hope you finish top of your class. :o)

You should try online classes if you can take them they really do work. A lot of the on line collages are transferable to the collage of your chose. In what ever you do dont give up move foward nothing is lost till you give up.

if you have a bachelor you can go the alt certified route - I looked into it, 6 weeks of training, then 1 year of paid on the job training, all for under $5000.
Mos states have an online program, which is what I looked into - you do the 6 weeks online, then find a school which will take you for the year after.

I am currently going to school part time, I have 2 children, 1 is at home - it is going to take me 3 years more to finish - I am doing it all online at the moment.
housework is suffereing LOL

As a mother who has gone to school, who has subbed, (yes I loved it, too~am an educational assistant now) if you can get it done quicker do so. I went back for a paralegal certificate and do not have a job in that field and have thought myself about a teaching certificate One woman suggested on line. I heard WGU Western Governors University is a good and affordable on line school. I would go there unless you have bundles of money. Check out the website. My personal thought is however, if your children are there a lot when you do this, I found them interrupting my studies all the time just like when we are on the phone.Make sure you can work when you do not have to be the MOM. I was wondering what your health scare was and how it relates to your decision?

I am currently enrolled in a state run program to get teachers certified. If I had gone the traditional route, I would have needed 1.5-2 years of class time. With the program I am in, I attend classes every friday night and all day saturday. It is intense, but I will be done in 8 months. You should contact your state board of ed. to see if there are any accelerated programs to earning your certificate.
Good luck,
C.
