Hi mamas! I am newly single, I have an almost 5 year old girl, and I work full time. My question is this. I've heard of single mothers going back to school and having grants to where their childcare and housing is paid for. Are there any mamas out there who have done this or at least heard of it? How do I look into this? Someone told me to go talk to a financial aid counselor at TCC, but I've done that before and they didnt really help me. That was before I was single though. Thanks in advance for the replies!

I would go back and talk to the counselor again. There is a chance that it is too late in the fiscal year to get financial aid...But you should fill out your fafsa (http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/) anyways.

Financial aid is first come first serve, so the sooner you fill out your fafsa the more likely you will get grants and other assistance. Then you will fill your fafsa out again next year (as soon as your tax information comes in). In your essays focus on how much you need the assistance...since your single there is no extra income...you need daycare...insurance for two...the rise in education fees...the drop in economy...

Good luck!

Google Pell Grants and feel free to contact me when you are filling out your applications. You will probably have to write an essay and I would be happy to edit it for you.

I would return to the TCC campus but visit the academic department that you wish to get a certificate or degree in (e.g. accounting department) Advisement from the department itself vs. the counselors I find most beneficial. All the campuses have a program titled "Women in new Roles" something you might want to look into. On another note use this link for financial assistance: http://www.tccd.edu/neutral/DivisionDepartmentPage.asp?pa... Best of luck to you!

Texas Woman's University in Denton has GREAT programs for mothers! They also have wonderful housing and children facilities-- i would highly rec. moving into their apts./dorms and sending your child to their child care/schools in Denton... if you moved their for just a few years to finish school-- no commute/save on gas and more study/family time for you and your child. Good luck TWU has many great programs esp. for women!
