Glycolic Peel Gone VERY WRONG!

Ladies- help.

I decided to treat myself to an afternoon away from work and home and have a facial. I had been anxious to have microdermabrasion, especially since in recent years my acne has become worse and my skin is scarring. While at this place (which, luckily for them will remain nameless)they convinced me that given the condition of my skin, the microdermabrasion would be much more effective if a few days before I did a glycolic peel. Though reluctant (mainly because I didn't trust the place- they were talking on the phone while putting on my mask), I agreed. She warned me there would be some burning and redness, but ladies....my face has scabs and burns on it where there was normal, healthy skin (under my eyes). All of my scars are now hyperpigmented. I work in medicine and have access to a lot of journals, it looks like this is "normal". I wanted some real, live experiences though. I want the microdermabrasion, especially if its going to work so much better after going through this hell, but I need advice! I will not go back to the same place, however!!!

Thanks!

I have a suggestion. You may want to try out Arbonne skin care products. I am an independant consultant and have a website www.betsycampbell.myarbonne.com We sell a wide range of products, but have an excellent acne line and anti-aging line. My daughter does facials and she recommends the products to all her clients. It has done wonders on my skin.

I have very very sensitive skin, and it sounds like you do too. I had a microdermabrasion and it went very wrong. I was red and peeling, it hurt so bad. I would not recommend it for your from the sounds of what already happened. I really like the AVEDA line for my skin. They have an acne line and a sensitive line. Both are great and natural. Sorry you had to go through this hell as did I. Try Aveda.

Hi I sell beauti control and you can buy the peel or microderm kit & do it yourself for about 50.00 for several applications so its more cost effective. If you don't normally have sensitive skin I would say maybe they overdid it. You can go to Ogle school of hair design and get a mircoderm facial for 16.00 It is wonderful, it takes them about an hour since they are students and their instructors constantly check on their work. I have NEVER have burning or scabs from either of those so I would recomend an at home thing you do yourself to control it (If it starts burning take it off) Or go somewhere else. Just FYI if you are interested www.beautipage.com/brandimerritt is my beauti control page, you can also look up products there. Good luck and don't let one bad experience spoil it for you.

I have had peels with results like you mention. My facialist will only do the superstrong ones during the winter when you'll have very little sun exposure. After 5-7 days of peeling, I find my skin looks beautiful and it really works to lighten any melasma I have. I say ditch the place if you don't trust them, but the procedure can be great. If I do a peel mild enough not to cause "down time" with a lot of flaking, I don't really see any results. I just get the stronger ones and plan that the worst of the peeling when I will be seeing the fewest number of people. Good luck!

I don't know about everyone else, but when I have had Glycolic Peels they certainly do not leave scabs or burns. Yes, it does tingle pretty intensely for a few minutes, but once they remove it, the tingling goes away and there is no burning or any type of remaining marks. Perhaps you just have super sensitive skin, but I wouldn't take the risk. I think you are very right to not go back to that same place!

My ex-dermotologist suggested the peel for me because I had a couple of dark spots/pigmentation on my face. I had a vedry bad experience as well and ended up with more darker pigmentation.

I went to Dr. Allen Menter (FANTASTIC dermotologist) and he said I am not a candidate for the peel due to my skin type. I am part Cherokee Indian and per Dr. Menter, my skin type is more prone to pigment after a procedure. like that. He said the other Dr. should have known I was not a candidate for this.

Everything is fine now, you can't tell the peel went wrong. I have great smooth skin. I learned a very valuable lesson and I don't mess with any procedures to my face. Dr. Menter prescribed some special creme (nothing with Retin A for me). I continue now with my regimen using Clinique daily.

Good luck and I hope it gets better soon.

Oh my! I am so sorry to hear about your face! Many women suffer redness and such from microdermabrasion treatments as well because of the harsh tools the offices use on your skin. Once your face heals, I would be more than happy to give you a complimentary microdermabrasion treatment in your home or mine. Our Mary Kay set sells for $55.00 and provides 30 weekly treatments. My friend who once spent $100s at Nieman Marcus for such treatments tells me our kit provides just as great results in only minutes in her home. It is very safe for your skin but we do recommend those with roscacia do not use this product. I pray you heal quickly and painlessly. God Bless!

I'm so sorry this happened to you. I use to get microdermabrasion when I lived in California and actually, my skin did well with it. I will say, this was prior to these last 2 kids and my skin too has gone through some stuff since having them. Your in medicine, so you know that alot of our skin issues can be from an internal problem. I would consider doing a really good herbal cleanse, nothing harsh. Advocare has a really gentle one for 7 days. After that see what happens with your skin. The cleanse can clear up acne issues alot. It will first get it all out, but then it disappears for a good long time till your body becomes toxic again.
I was never advised to do a peel and then micro. I've done both, but very far apart...like years. The micro feels a little like a sunburn for about a day but doesn't necessarily look burned. The peel...I can't comment on that N. because the results sound...possible but not common with a mild peel. See what happens once everything heals. There is a period of peeling that happens with this type of procedure but afterwards the skin can look really nice. Let's cross our fingers for that result and then I would maybe get a second opinion on when it would even be appropriate to get the microdermabrasion since you already had a strong reaction like this. Good Luck with everything and I'm pulling for a really pretty outcome!

I've had more than one "medium peel" (much stronger than glycolic peel) and never had actual scabbing -- kept bactracin on all healing areas at all times. Sounds like they don't know what they're doing. Also, you shouldn't need dermabrasion after a peel. It would be too harsh on the newly revealed skin -- especially in your case.
I suggest you go to a dermatologist for future treatments like this.

I would go to the place and complain and tell them they have to fix it free of charge!!! Don't do it over the phone because they can blow you off easier. If you're there in front of other customers, they will deal with it. So sorry to hear this happened to you!

Hello Niki, K. here...I have same problem with my skin. I had the microdermobrasion done but it didn't help very much at all. I know you have been through alot with the glycolic peel but what really worked for me was the Obagi blue peel. It hurts but it takes years off and takes almost all of the scars off. Your face is blue for a few days then it starts to tighten and in a week or so 4 to 5 layers of that old scarred skin peels away and you have new soft skin with less wrinkles and scars gone. It worked so well I have had it done 2 times in 2 yrs. It is worth every penny.

I have had both procedures done and they do work with wonderful results! I had mine done at a derm. office, and they applied the peel then deactivated it then followed with the microderm. The peel was slightly uncomfortable (stinging and some burning sensation). On another visit, she suggested that I increase the percentage on the peel which was when I experienced some of what you described. I told her what happened, and she explained to me that my skin could not tolerate the higher percentage. You should also know that you will be very sun sensitive, and that you should never go out w/out suncreen once you are regularly using a peel.
As I said, I love my results, and I am going in on a regular basis to have this done.

After your skin has healed completely you can do the microdermabrasion, but DON'T go to a salon-find a good dermatologist who does this-it will cost just about the same. Dr. Bowers in Southlake is supposed to be very good.

N.,
I had the best facial and peel at ProActiveWorx in Flower Mound.

The use Aveda skin care products, which are all natural, and the technician was really great.

It was very expensive, but worth it. The place you went to sounds not good.

I don't' use the Aveda skin care products at home, I use BeautiControl skin care and love it. But for a deep facial I recommend the Aveda.

Several years back I had a few glycolic peels that really changed my life. In a good way. I had never had anything that had improved the look and texture of my skin like the glycolic peel. It was tingly and afterwards my skin was red and blotchy for a day and then my skin got real dry for a day and little flaky. After that nothing but beautiful skin which I had never had in my whole life. I did one glycolic peel a month for 3 months and then had regular pore cleansing facials and I can't say enough good things about how they worked for me.

I'd say you shouldn't go back to the place you went. Go to a dermatologist or a reputable skin care place and see if they can repair the damage and then put you on a routine. The glycolic peel should not have had those results.

Good luck.

HI N.,
I am an esthetician with 13 years experience with glycolic peels and 5 years experience with Microdermabrasion. While the side effects you are having could be considered in the normal spectrum for a peel that you would receive in a dermatologists office they are in NO WAY normal for a salon procedure! (Salon estheticians should only be using a more mild solution) Also, if you have never had glycolic before you absolutely should have received a patch test of the product 24-48 hours prior to having applied to the entire face. This is the facialist's failure in not doing so. Also, glycolic and microdermabrasion together is a very intense treatment for someone who hasn't been having regular treatment.

I would suggest STRONGLY that you stay out of the sun and wear a "physical sunblock" with Titanium Dioxide in it (stings less on irritated skin than one with chemicals) until your skin has healed or you may see a worsening of your hyperpigmented areas. Also, a little bit of hydro-cortisone cream (OTC) can help wiht the inflammation. DON'T use any home care products with glycolic, salycilic, vitamin A etc. Only wash with cool water and a your hands until all inflamation has subsided. Also, RUN LIKE CRAZY form that unprofessional, inexperienced esthetician!!!!!

So sorry you had to go through that!!! THe up side is, with proper after care, your skin may actually look pretty good after the peeling is through!

I've dealt with intense micro and peels to get rid of pretty bad melasma over my lip. It was gawd-awful, but nothing like you say. I find calendula ointment worked the best for my healing. It is naturally antiseptic and super-healing. You can probably also treat homeopathically for burn. Whole Foods should carry Cantharis in the homeopathic section. Dissolve one pellet in a bottle of water and sip on it in little bits through the day. ASAP for best chance at healing.

Glycolic acid can do that to you if the acid is too strong, which sounds like it was!

Stupid me ordered some 15% glycolic acid off of ebay a couple of years ago and I ended up burning my face severely in a coule of spots - turns out you should only use a 3% solution on your face. My esthetician was PISSED that I put something that strong on my face and she said if done correctly it shouldn't burn me that badly.

Put lots of pure aloe on it if you can, that made a huge difference for me and helped me heal a lot faster.

Here is my lady's website if you want to contact her and see what she has to say about your face:
