In trying to figure out what foods are causing autoimmune issues for me my doc. has suggested an elimination diet. I am looking for recipes, bakeries, ideas, thoughts or suggestions. Has anyone else gone on an elimination diet like this? Other moms keeping a gluten free home? I know these foods are high on the food alergin list so I am hoping others out there can help if they have had similar experiences. Any thoughts or suggestions would be helpful. Oh, any stores or bakeries in the Naperville-Plainfield area besides Whole Foods, Trader Joes or Meijer that sell gluten free foods. What of those foods are worth the money? One last request is for good books to read about health and food related issues. Thanks so much!!

What can I do next?

Cook the way your grandma cooked - a protein, a simple starch (potato or brown rice) and a vegetable. Whole foods, whole foods, whole foods. Decline any foods with ingredients that you cannot pronounce and/or spell.

If you are trying to eliminate sugars, potatoes and rice will be out for awhile.

Personally I think the problem with sugars are the processed ones.

Check your library before you buy a bunch of cook books. That way you can "try it before you buy it." One that I like is "Special Diets for Special Kids" - it is oriented towards asd issues but it is wonderful for gluten and dairy free recipes. I also like a book called "The Kid-Friendly ADHD & Autism Cookbook."

I also try to avoid genetically modified food, and artificial dyes. Whenever possible I buy organic produce.

Walmart has started to carry some gluten free products. Perhaps ask the manager for a list or the area of the store where they are located.

Good luck and good health.

We are gluten-free, sugar-free, eat only very specific dairy, and though the rest of my house is not corn-free (we are getting there!), I am because I have noticed a reaction. I have done this on my own because I can't find a doc to help! (I would love your doc's name- s/he sounds fantastic for recommending this for you!)

I could not find any resources when we began, so I am in the process of compiling my own, and have created a blog where we talk about recipes and what works or doesn't work for us. There is a link to books there also, and feel free to contact me there or here.

Good luck!

I am just learning more about this, and my sister sent me a short article from the Detroit News that featured a book and a couple of recipes. The recipe book is called The Allergen-Free Baker's Handbook: How to bake without gluten, wheat, dairy, eggs, soy, peanuts, tree nuts and sesame by Cybele Pascal

You can also check out http://www.kidswithfoodallergies.org/. They have a free recipe section, as well as a special more advanced/comprehensive recipe section (part of the site that is available only to paying members).

Find yourself a good natural foods store in your area. They carry cook books that are great and you can buy things there.

Hi,

My son is Gluten and Sugar free. I have found a great soft bread that is perfect for sandwiches. I have included the site so that you can find who sells it in your area. Pasta Joy, at Henry's and Whole Foods and sometimes in Walmart/Target. Their brown rice pasta is great. Just cook it al dente and rinse.

For us, having a bread and pasta option makes things easier.

Meijer definitely sells gluten-free items. We're in the Indianapolis area - it's a small section, but definitely there. Whole Foods and Trader Joes have a greater selection, but more costly.

I do not have a gluten issue, but I've noticed these products while in the store.

Thought it may be a huge adjustment, it's feasible for all but sugar. Does he specifically mean sucrose (table sugar). There are literally sugars in just about everything. Lactose is the dairy sugar, Fructose is the sugar in fruits, etc. I'd get clarification on that one because it's going to single handedly be the most difficult to eliminate as sugars are a staple of sustenance.

Forgot to mention.......SUGAR FREE only means SUCROSE free. You'll have to learn to read that section of the nutritional information. Sugar alcohols, sucralose (Splenda), etc. are all sugars that will provide carbohydrates in food. But, the FDA does require that the "sugar" source of carbs be listed clearly.

Good luck!
