Glass of a Window Replaced?

When we bought our house, one window in our bedroom was a little cloudy. It was our first house, we thought nothing of it. Now the window looks terrible. The seal broke, and it needs to be replaced. We were going to give a window credit when we sold the house, but I honestly cannot look at it another week. Hubby seems to think I can call a glass company that builds replacements for windows!? Do companies really do this? The windows were new when we bought the house 9 years ago, but the previous owner did everything himself, so it wasnt always the best job.

Has anyone replaced glass in a window before?

What can I do next?

That's easy. Window replacement companies are all over and sometimes have same day service. We've had a couple of window replaced with no issues

They should still be under warranty if they are only 9 years old. I'd call the manufacturer. If they're double pane, I don't think you can (and if you do you'll void the warranty) just replace the glass.
I'd call the manufacturer.

I had glass replaced by a glass place. They came out and did it and it wasn't a big deal at all. Just look in the phone book and call them. Have the measurements handy or have a measuring tape and be right by the window so you can give them the dimensions.

I know the manufacturer of my windows can send out one half of the window and they are pretty easy to take out and replace. How much I don't know because they are all still fine.

Oh what I am talking about is replacing the whole panel, not just the glass, they twist and come out. Thankfully never had to do it.

Replacing glass in a window is one of the things glass companies do best. Give a call to your local place, explain the situation, and ask if someone will come out and look at it.

sweetie, just call a glass company. they do this every day. it's what they're in business to do.
it worries me that after 9 years of living with it, all of a sudden now that you're leaving, it's grown into an ogre.

Yes. It isn't even expensive. Just call a window company. I am not sure that they do this for impact glass windows as we have down here in Florida but they do it up north for both single pane and double pane windows.

Any glass company will do this. We have old jalousie doors (the kind from the 50's/60's with glass louvers that open and close) and the louvers break all the time. I had 9 of them replaced last summer, along with glass in 2 of the 5 casement windows in our family room and a glass panel in the garage door. Mine were all ones where we could take the pieces in and have them made there and then we picked them up and put them back in but if yours is one part of a window that you can't remove, they should be able to do it on-site.

One of the windows in the apartment upstairs had to be fixed. Since it was the 2nd floor, no problems blocking it. We took it to Ace Hardware and they replaced glass and resealed it. You might want to check around though if it is on your main floor to make sure it can be done quickly. I think it was about $24.

Carlson Glass on Front Street in Wheaton will do it quickly. Take out the whole window, frame and all, and they'll repair it.

Ace at Danada is an option, too, but they're MUCH slower.

Google window repair. Or, if you know who made the window (Anderson?) you can contact them directly.

We had to have both panes of glass (double pane, low-e) in a window last year because they were broken. There was nothing wrong with the frame, the glass people just took measurements and replaced the glass. Cheaper than installing a whole new window.

We had one replaced on our last house. I don't remember it being expensive or hard to do (a glass company did it). Make a few phone calls to get an idea of cost.
