I recommend Richard Scarry's Biggest Word Book Ever. It's got to be 1.5 x 2.5 feet (like a small poster size) and kids just adore it. Endless fun, words, learning. If you don't have it already your 3.5 year old will love it too.
Hello! My younger son is turning one on March 21 and family members are starting to ask for gift ideas. We also have a 3.5 year old boy so we have a lot of trucks...Are there any toys that you recommend having 2 of? I am thinking a second toy lawn mower or balls for the backyard so they don't argue over them this spring. Any new toys in the last few years that we may not have? We already have zoo and museum memberships so they are not needed.
Thanks!

Do you have a cozy coupe? If not, GET ONE!!! They are always a hit with a variety of ages.
-Schleich animals. My daughter has been playing with the farm animals we got her non stop since her first birthday (she's 20 months now!) We got an adult animal and matching baby animal for like 8 kinds of animals. Just got her a barn too, which she loves. You could also get a second set of another category of animals (safari,, forest, aquatic...) then their might be less fighting. These animals are not cheap, but they are sturdy, realistic and overall reflect the actual relative sizes of animals
-step stool
-two sided easel
Does he have any Bristle Blocks? Those are great!
A water table - make sure you get one with a plug/drain so that you can drain water out easily.
An outdoor picnic table for play doh & other messy things outside?
Step 2 push car.
Any kid musical instruments for fun?
Wood puzzles.
My son got a water table, little people ramp and wheelies, vtec basketball goal, and wooden rocking chair for his first B-day.
Hi S.,
I sell Discovery Toys and we have a few things for one year old boys that I love. You can tell family members and friends about them. They all come with a lifetime warranty, so they will definitely last a long time! You can view all of them at http://www.discoverytoyslink.com/karenchao but I will list a few of my favorites for one year old boys below:
Castle Marbleworks: http://www.discoverytoyslink.com/esuite/control/product?P... (my 3.5 year old STILL plays with this - they do not need to be two years old as the age recommendation states... a one year old can definitely play happily with this toy)
Hammer Away: http://www.discoverytoyslink.com/esuite/control/product?P...
Measure Up Cups: http://www.discoverytoyslink.com/esuite/control/product?P... (I know there are other similar products on the market, but none have as many layers of learning built in, nor do they come with a lifetime warranty)
Go Go Caterpillar: http://www.discoverytoyslink.com/esuite/control/product?P... (new walkers LOVE chasing this toy around the house!)
Please let me know if you have any questions. I hope you'll check out my site and find something wonderful for your son.

My suggestion is books, books and more books. My DD just took to books like a fish to water. We never pushed it on her but she just loves her board books and plays with them all day long. And I couldnt be happier about that. She also has enough 'other' toys to fill a barn (which she plays with too) but she loves books. She also received a play kitchen that is designed for 3+ for her 1st birthday and I was a bit sceptical as per the age suggestion but she freakin loves that thing.
Good Luck and happy birthday to your little one
