Gift Ideas for My 1 Year Old Son's Birthday

I feel kinda stupid asking this question, but I have no idea what to get my soon to be 1 year old son for his birthday. My husband and I took him to Toys R Us on Saturday to see if we could get a reaction from him on some potential gifts, but the only thing he got excited about was a ball. So naturally we are getting him the ball, but other than that, we are at a loss. He loves things that light up and make noise and we really don't mind them, but we just don't want to spend a lot of money on things that he'll play with for a couple of days then show no intrest in.

He's already got a Leapster Learning Table and a couple of ride on toys, but other than that, it's still mostly baby stuff. I need ideas for big boy toys. Is there anything that your children just love? Help!
TIA

If he likes things that light up get him some light up sandles or tennis shoes. My dughter was over joyed when we got her a pair when she was younger. Other than that the hard plastic tonka trucks. My son is 10 and still has his, those things are built to last. Oh and the cupcake cake in the shape of the one is one of the cutest cakes I have every seen.

Hope he has a great birthday..

For my daughters 1st birthday, we had a family party. I got her a cabbage patch doll. That is the only present I got her. Instead of all the gifts, I had a BEAUTIFUL cake made and hired a photographer to come and take tons of pictures. I am so glad I did that because the toys would be long forgotten by now, but we will have the pictures forever.
My mom bought her the sit and spin zebra and she LOVES it still!

J., I honestly agree with Megan, Mega Blocks are great as are Little People toys. My DH and I actually buy very little for birthdays because of the gifts from others and instead put more money in their college IRAs.

My son is turning one in a few weeks and we are getting him a sandbox. We recently took him to the park and he had such a great time playing in the big sandbox there. I don't know what the exact name is but Leap Frog has a some great baby learning toys that make noise. My other suggestion is Baby Signs. Teaching your baby sign language is great for both of you.

Hi J.,
To be honest with you I don't remember getting my daughter anything for her first b-day. She got so many other presents from other people that we just didn't. I think I might have gotten her a dress or something but I didn't see the point in buying her anything major that she wouldn't remember anyway. As far a big boy toys you could try the big legos, remote contol car (they sell them for 12 months) or one of those pop up tents for inside. Hope that helps a little bit. Congrats on making it through the first year!!

We got our son a toybox for his birthday. I'm always a big fan of puzzles and books as well because those are the kinds of things you can't have too many of. He also loved cars, and little boys can't get too many of those either!

If you want something durable and that they will love for years, get something from V-Tech. My aunt gave my first daughter a V-Tech ball for her 1st b-day. It lights up, plays music, and has picture buttons that say the name of the picture when they are pushed: mommy, daddy, kitty, bunny, etc. My daughter rolled it all over the place and loved the lights and music. Past it down to my other girls and they loved it. Lasted until last year. Now only the lights come on; the music has gone out. But it lasted 8 yrs. My oldest is 9 yrs old now. Anything from V-Tech lasts a long time; they are very durable.
Also, I buy lots of books for my girls. It's a great way to get them to read and get into that good habit early for when they start school. And reading to them lets you enjoy more quality time with them.

I wish I had the restraint of some of the other posters, but for my first baby, I was not as good!! That and we dont really have big birthday parties, so I love buying them presents. If your little man does not have the bounce and spin zebra, it is a must. My now 21 month old got it for Christmas and he loves it!! It may seem like your son is too young for it at first, but it is a great toy for him to pull up on, and play with the lights while he stands until he gets the hang of it. Most of the bigger toys will take a little bit for him to grow into, but you dont have another excuse for a while to buy toys, so plan ahead. I agree with the little people and sand box ideas!! My son has also liked the plastic tools sets from walmart. They were like $5 each and he really has enjoyed them. And, of course, you could try to find some "chunky" cars to play with. Happy shoppig!! ~A.~

The best gift you can give him is TIME! My boys fav toys at that age (and 3 years later still play with) a john deere tractor (push wiht feet - 16 somthing) at Tractor Supply and a Gator from the same place...Duplos are good - if you sit with him...but don't worry about a 1st birthday..just enjoy the day - his getting cake all over his face, not wanting to open gifts, etc. Make a handprint of him for his scrapbook and call it a day just snuggling with him - write a letter to him what the first year has ment to you!!!!

I agree with the other posters that said they didn't get their one year old's much. Trust me, all too soon you will have way too many toys and legos and crayons and parts of toys underfoot. That said, I know the feeling that you must get them something, so I would go with the big legos, those have been a hit with both my kids. Congrats on your baby's bday.

we just threw my son his first bday party...soo many toys, and clothes, and books...they get so much from others...truly putting money in a bond or college fund would the best thing.

I would suggest Little People toys, musical instruments, books, wooden puzzles (I got some at Toys R Us that only had 3 pieces each with big pegs for little hands).

I take a picture of my daughter every year on her birthday at the exact moment she was born. It is fun to look back over the years and see how much she's changed.
