Any ideas? I don't want to get a gag gift. And she NEVER buys herself anything.

She loves to garden.

What can I do next?

What about a subscription to a gardening magazine and/or a beautiful coffee table book about flowers? In a basket with the knee pads/kneeling cushion and shovel & claw tools?

What about a set of pretty stepping stones for her garden?

A gift card to a garden center near her?

Maybe a Harley? Or a Mustang? teehehe

I like to garden. Nothing beats an excellent pair of gardening gloves. I would look for them at your local garden center or on line. It's been my experience that places like Lowe's or Home Depot do not carry higher end brands.

Can never have too many planters either. Or trowels.

Or books!

:)

How about something small from Tiffany's? Everyone loves that little blue box.

For a special birthday, try an event rather than a thing. Is there a big home and garden show coming to some convention center near you? Can you get her tickets to it, maybe (girls' weekend!) even go with her if it's out of town and pay for one night at a hotel? You'd have to blow any surprise by asking her if she's free that weekend but it would be worth it.

Also, you don't have to go with a garden theme. I have given movie-loving (or even movie-liking) friends gift cards to local movie theatres and that has been a huge hit. Package the cards in one of those classic red-and-white-striped popcorn boxes with some Junior Mints and other classic movie candies to set the theme. Or take her out -- to a play, a concert, etc., something live and special. Events make memories more than things do. Or to get back to gardening, perhaps give her a gift certificate for "after-gardening hand care" -- a card for a great manicure place packaged with hand creams, a fantastic nail kit for home use too, etc., all in a beautiful basket, maybe with some new plants she can transplant outside in your area.... Have fun with this! Packaging things in fun, themed ways makes the gift of a card or certificate so much more special.

How funny, I have just been at my best friend's b/day party (she also turned 40). I got her Swarowski earrings, she loved them! I really wanted something she can keep and wear. They sparkle so much and are very affordable. What is your budget?

mani/pedi? Facial or massage? tickets to a show with you? (not sure how much money you are willing to spend).
I am not much of a gardener, so don't know what to tell you for that category. However, I just purchased a very cute book for my kids called Roots, Shoots, buckets and Boots by Sharon Lovejoy. Many of the reviews I read said this book was a treasure for both the seasoned and novice gardener of any age.
Good luck!

Host an informal dinner party with about 6 other girlfriends. Girls in this age bracket (over 39) love time with other girls to chat and discuss (curse) the aging process... This way she can get lots of other gifts too.
