We are expecting our second child the week of Thanksgiving. Our daughter is 6 y/o. We want to get her a gift from the Baby that will be given to her at the hospital. The thing is, we're not sure what to get. All I can think of coloring book and crayons. My mother found a Precious Moment Figure that says "I'm the Big Sister", but we wanted to give her something else that she could play with or touch. What ideas do you have? What have you done? TIA

What can I do next?

Maybe a 'build-a-bear' ....

A friend's MIL made one for her 5 YO boy from his new little sister. She used his favorite color/theme (Superman, or something I think) and put a 'sign' on it that said something like, "for my hero or big brother or My Guardian angel or something like that....from (name) with her birth date on it. He loved it.

Congratulations!!!!!!!!
I am due anytime with my third a little girl and I had asked the same thing. This is what we ended up doing.

My daughter is 6 and half years old and my son is 5 and half years old.
I went to the craft store got paint and plain colored (their choice of color and paint) and painted Im the big brother on his and im the big sister x2 for my daughters.
They put their handprints on it and we left room to put babys footprints on one of the shoulders. We also got a plain onsie for baby that the kids out I love my baby sister on it and their hand prints. They are so excited.

My kids will be at the hospital once I have the baby. I wanted them to be one of the first to see the baby. So I got a backpack for each of them and put color wonder coloring books with the markers in it, some stickers, little toy cars and ponies, and some snacks and a camera in their bag along with a blanket of theirs just in case they need it in the waiting room.
Best of luck and once again congratulations!

You could think about getting her a big-sister gift from YOU. And a super-soft stuffed animal is nice....and then she has her own "baby" to hold while you hold yours. -- You could always mention to a couple of people that you are close to, if they could also bring a big sister gift when they come to see the baby for the 1st time. We had several people do this...just little things like a book, or stuffed animal, or outfit, or blanket for her. It was also great when people walked into our home and gave attention first to the big sibling and then asked them to introduce them to their new little sibling. You can ask your close friends and the grandparents to be sensitive and make this special effort. It makes sense once you are reminded of it, but it is not people's first impulse. Just the fact that you are thinking about it indicates that you will continue to be great parents to your older daughter. :)

First, congratulations!

If you decide to do a Build-a-Bear type gift, I just wanted to let you know that my company, Noah's Ark Workshop, has very similar animals (same manufactorer). BUT my animals can be packaged as a "to-go" kit and the child actually stuffs the animal with their own hands- no machine doing the stuffing (the "to-go" kit comes with everything needed including the easy instructions). And, my company owns the patent on our closure which is a very nice LOCKING snap system where the seam virtually disappears on most animals.
Here is a code for $5 off a website order of any animal. The animal will ship directly to your home. ####-###-####
My website is: www.NoahsArkWorkshop.com/ReginaBoyett537

Again, congratulations!

When our youngest was born we gave his Sister a silver bracelet with a charm of her initional. (K). This way it something she can keep and later change when she out grows the bracelet. We also gave our boys dog tags, the baby is one and they all still love their big sibling gifts. Good luck and congrats on the baby.

I don't have any suggestions, but I had to say thanks for posting this!! I'm due in 7 weeks, and I've been trying to figure out what to get my 2 y/o son. I got lots of great ideas on here! I like the build-a-bear idea. I think I'll probably make one ahead of time from baby to my 2 y/o that he doesn't know about, but then maybe have my mom take my son to make the new baby one while we're in the hospital (to give him a special thing to do while I'm not with him). For a little girl, though, I do like the charm bracelet idea! Congrats on your little "turkey baby"!!

maybe a neclace with a pendant about sisters that she could wear and show her friends and family. Also, there are some really cute big sister t-shirts. A baby doll of her own with a diaper bag so she can practice helping Mama. Make sure that you let her touch and hold the baby. Just as you and the baby need to bond so do the siblings.

Hi J.,

We got our daughter a pregnant barbie, she was 4 when her little brother came. We also talked about how the baby belonged to the 'family'. We also got her a big sister t-shirt. When my next child was born we made t-shirts the kids could wear to the hospital to meet their new sister. You could also get her a new baby doll. Is there something special she has been asking for?

You know your daughter best. The main thing to give her is love and let her help you with the new baby.

Congrads on your growing family.

J.,

Many people give their older child big brother/sister presents, which is great. We did that, too. I really don't think it matters what you get your daughter, as long as you give her something. She will be so happy that she gets a present, which is the main thing. I think crayons and a coloring book is great. She can color in your hospital room. Or, just ask her what she wants. Tell her it's a surprise, but you would like to know if there any toy she would like to have. If you don't want to ask her, just get her something you know she would love. Best of luck w/ the birth!

I had a similar situation ,but my daughter was only 2yrs. We did want to make her feel very special. we chose to get her something small for every day she was away from us. Books and crayons were great especially those days she came to the hospital to visit. (I had a c-section) Others were just small toys and a doll that excited her. It was a newborn doll that had a wristband and birth certificate. We also got her a t-shirt that said I'm the big sister. I believe we had a baby one too...I'm the little sister. And for friends with the same situation I made those siblings feel special at the shower by making them a special shirt or pin to wear. And my daughter received several gifts from others at our baby shower. Just some thoughts! Congratulations!

Oooo! What a fun question. What if you got a singing toy of some kind that would be a nice gift for your daughter but might also encourage her to sing and dance for the baby?

My daughter is 12 going on 13 but we got her a stuffed animal from our new 2 month old.

Good luck!

Well, it depends on how much you want to spend, but what about a build-a-bear from the baby..or maybe even matching ones for both of them to snuggle. Or, if she has any interest, American Girl dolls are a hit with my girls. Of course, what about something like a new handheld video game..I know its not sentimental, but it could help during those times that you cant quite entertain her. I have 5 kids now, and we have always done stuff from the dollar store in a new little basket or something. It keeps them happy for the first few days when I get home, and then it gradually makes its way to the trash:) Something that she associates as a "big girl" toy might help her feel grown up, so if there is something she has been wanting, it might be a good time for it! Good luck..you will love her in a whole new way when you see the love she has for her new brother/sister. Its AMAZING!!

When my sister was born I was 4 1/2. My mom had the nurse bring a baby doll out to me in the waiting room, all wrapped up like my baby sister. Any time my mom had to nurse my sister or change her diaper, I would do the same with my baby doll (there's a funny picture of me wearing one of my mom's bras over my shirt to "nurse" my baby doll...) My mom said this really helped me with the adjustment. Do you think it would help your daughter?

When my second child was born we allowed my then 3.5 year old to plan a birthday party for his baby brother. He went to the store, pick out a small gift, made cupcakes with Grandma's help, and bought party blowers all while mommy was delivering. Then when he came to meet his brother we had the party he planned. He LOVED it and felt very much included.

We did buy him activities he could do while visiting the hospital and would transfer to home..ie coloring book, puzzle, and a race car.

My daughter was just shy of six when her brother was born- seven years ago. I also wanted to give her something "from the baby". We got a nice, but not too nice to play wiht, BOY doll (she had girls already) and she played with it while I attended to her brother. It was realistic enough and just the right weight that it seemed like her own baby and she'd misister to it just like i was to her brother--change diapers etc. She considered it "from" her brother.

We gave our 3 1/2 year old a digital camera. She loves it. It is fun to look at the pictures she takes. It really keeps her occupied. Just be sure to get a big memory stick or you will constantly be asked to clear room on it because they fill it up so fast.

I had my second when my oldest was 3. We asked her what sort of gift she would like to receive when her baby sister arrived. She went on and on about how much she wanted a Big Bird doll. So, that's what we gave her. The look on her face was priceless when she opened a gift at the hospital that contained the Big Bird doll. She thought her sister somehow provided it for her. We still laugh about it because it's such a great memory.

We made our daughter and goody bag with colors and books and candy and just a lot of different goodies in it. We also had a shirt made for her that said I'm ------ The Big Sister! It was really cute and all the nurses used it as a tool to talk to her and it made her feel special and important.

Good luck...

I would do a big sister charm necklace. Because she can wear it and it will be her own "special" thing. It doesn't have to say big sister....but i am sure you could find something small and cute at James Avery, but if you are looking for something cheaper try target or walmart! good luck!

We gave our son a digital camera (he was three at the time so it was a toddler version). It worked out great! We told him it was his job to get extra pictures of his new sister. I think he took pictures of everything BUT his sister (my ivs, the trash cans, tile floors). But it gave him something constructive to do while everyone oohhed and ahhed over the baby. I was induced so we gave it to him the night before so he would know how to use it.

J., When my second child was born my friends brought a big white bunny to the hospital for my then 2 year old. She cherishes it now and sleeps with it. She knows she received it when her 1st little sister arrived. That was 6 years ago and it's still fluffy white and soft.
P.S.
I like the charm bracelet idea, but that was something I did for my girls from me and each Christmas and birthday I add a charm to it.
