As crass as it may seem, many people just give money. Then the graduate can pool it all together to get a new laptop, etc.
My neighbor is having a Graduation party for her daughter who just graduated from college and will be attending medical school in the fall. We were wondering what an appropriate gift might be to take (keeping in mind we have a small budget--$20ish). My kids are still in elementary school, so I have no idea what college graduates might need/want. Thanks!

College Graduates always need ....MONEY!!!! I would get a pretty card and put a check inside. That way she can use it towards whatever she needs...setting up her new home...putting gas in her car, something she needs for medical school....wherever it is needed most.
Your congratulations and warm wishes will mean more to her than anything else.

When my sister graduated we had a big party and everyone just brought her money or housewarming-type gifts. I think the idea is that as they graduate, they are going out in the world to start life, so I would ask if they are registered anywhere or buy them something for their home, sort of a...good luck out there type thing. I hope this helps. :D

money is always good. Or at least that is what all my teenage nieces and nephews tell me, no matter the amount they are happy to get money because if each person gets them a 15-20.00 gift then they have all this little stuff they don't know what to do with. They like to add all the money gifts together and buy one bigger item like an ipod or video game or something more expensive that they will use. Gas cards are also good because what teenager/young adult doesn't need gas for their car? college students always need money.
Gift cards are always great for that age. They can get what they want. I would even consider getting a visa gift card (found at walmart). That way she even spend it on books or school supplies or going out to eat with friends.
Money is always appreciated. I'd give her $25, if you can afford it. When added to what they get from relatives, it's not unusual for grads to walk away from these parties with between $500 and $1000!
Good Morning J., What we did for our College grads was give a gift card to Barnes and Noble or a nice restaurant.
If you could up your gift by $10 / $20 they could either have a nice meal or help get some much needed Books for school. What ever you decide I am sure will be appreciated, even if you just give a card of congratulations.
God Bless you J. for your thoughtfulness

Gift cards are great, but check the fine print on the back, they can start losing money as soon as 1 month after you buy it. We bought a Visa card and saw on the back that after a month they start charging a fee eventually it will not have any money on it, I wouldn't go this route again! Cash is the best, they will have lots of expenses and probably have college loans already to pay off, any amount is appreciated!
I have a 3 year old and a 1 year old and tight budget as well, so I def. have no idea what to get a college graduate either, but if it was me and my family on our budget, the person would get a card and a hug and I'd feel just fine about doing that. If you have to give a gift, I always go with a nice ink pen and pencil set. You can usually pick up a decent set at Office Depot or the like for around $25-$35, and up of course, but you don't have to get an expensive one.
I think that the $20 is perfect and I would give her cash or a check. Hopefully, she will put it in her savings account! I think they probably need money more than anything, whether it's to help with bills or to build a savings account.
My daughter just graduated from college and we had her party here. Cash is always great for them, they have bills and need extra money for things they might not have the budget for. I would watch the gift cards because of the companies taking fees, etc...

money is always good for graduates, as many have said, and if they're striking out on their own, a gift card, to target or bed bath and beyond is always good too.
20 would be fine in my opinion. I give that amount to all my friends kids that graduate, you do what you can and it all adds up!
