My son is going to a classmates birthday party Saturday. She is turning seven. I was going to look for a gift for her today and figured I should ask what seven year old girls are into. She isn't a really "girly" girl, so I can't see her liking Barbies. I'm assuming that she's too old for Littlest Pet Shop, Polly Pockets, and My Little Ponies now. Maybe a game or some Lego? What are your seven year olds playing with? I would do a gift certificate for some kind of entertainment, but there are four kids in her family, so if I give her a gift certificate, then her parents would have to take all the sisters as well. I usually like to stay in the $15 range for birthday gifts.
Thanks for the suggestions. I went with the craft kit. It's a Crayola Pop Art Pixies kit. She gets to decorate glass vases with paints and stickers. I also have a really cute pair of gloves and some sidewalk chalk to go with.
Many girls, even those who aren't "girly" as you say, do like crafts. Consider getting her a craft kit -- there are many kinds at the craft store. If you think she would not be into making jewelry or friendship bracelets, look for other things like clay crafts, a painting and drawing set, etc. Even if she does not use it soon, she likely will use it one day!
Craft type of stuff is always a hit. You can pick up kits to make anything from bird houses to braided bracelets to picture frames. My grand kids are ages 6-9 and they all love creating things.
My daughter and most girls in her class love things from Justice. (I'm not sure your son's friend would follow suit as she isn't a girly girl...but there is quite the selection to choose from there)
Otherwise they are all into Monster High.
Or chapter books might be a good idea, as they are getting into those at this age.
My daughter just had a party and received a gift card to Target that she really liked too and was able to pick out her own item.
They have Lego "Friends" sets that are essentially Legos for girls. The sets are pretty cute and within your price range. You could also do an arts-and-crafts set. Those are usually well-received (at least my nieces love them).
Just make sure to include a gift receipt so that the parents can return it if it's not "her style"!

have your son go and pick something out he thinks is cool..thats not to gender specific..chances are she would love it too
i J. have my 6 year old pick it out...things dont change much in a year. we were J. at a 7 year old girl birthday party and the hit was a step on piano game where each key had a letter and there were cards to go with it for songs. odd i wouldve never thought of it.

I would say some sort of crafty thing. Potholders, make your own bouncy balls, friendship bracelet sets, even the "science-y" type stuff like volcanos from Michael's would have been a huge hit with my daughter.
She also liked tablets/journals and funky pens a lot at that age. She used them to write stories and make up jokes, and even to "document" her dinosaur bone hunts...
If she's not girly then she won't want Barbies & the like. American Girl dolls & most things at Justice are over your spending limit. I think most girls that age like arts & crafts type things. Hobby Lobby & Michael's have a lot of really cool things to choose from. Or, you can put together a craft kit for her, if you don't have any chain craft stores near you. My DD will be 7 in April and she LOVES that stuff. She also loves books, Polly Pockets, stuffed animals, anything small/figurine type stuff.
Hula hoop, jump rope, side walk chalk, a book on how to make something and the materials to get started, or h tub paint soaps.

Legos? Well, you should make sure if the girl likes that or not. Per my daughter and her friends, they either like it or not. My daughter likes it.
Some of her friends, girls, were not into it.
Crafts Kits... are also very, popular and well liked.
Books too. Or a gift card for a bookstore, plus something else.
And no, just because you give a gift card to one child, it does not mean that the family then has to take ALL the kids to get/buy something too. My kids are not like that. If they get a gift card as a birthday gift, then they can get something. The other sibling does not expect me to buy the other sibling something too, just because one of them is using their gift card.

My daughter is 7 and loves arts & crafts stuff. You can either buy a kit for something that looks fun or just buy markers, craft paper, paints etc. Science kits are fun and can be found in that price range. We have found a solar robot for my daughter to build at a hobby store and bought a kitchen science kit as a gift. You could also go the board game route. There are quite a few games for that age.
On my dd's 7th party, she got pajamas, jewelry kits, sparkly shirts, hair stuff like pretty head bands, puzzles, stationary, lots of barbies (I know you said she wasn't into that)
jewelry (bracelets and necklaces and watches), board games, tie dye kits
shockingly, my daughters have loved making potholders. Same with their friends when they come over. So if she doens't have a kit, that might be a good one. Not real expensive from what I remember.
