Getting Pet Urine Out of Hardwood Floor

While trying to house train our miniature Yorkie I didn't see an accident until it had soaked and dried into our hard wood floor. Now there's a dark circle about 4-5 inches in diameter. Any suggestions on how to get it out?

What can I do next?

Hi S.,

I use an awesome product from a wellness company called Rustic Touch. It works wonders on wood, leather, even fills in scratches on CD's! They have lots of other great products as well. You do have to be a member to shop there. For more info, message me.

We had the same problem except the stains were from a previous owners pet. I mixed a paste of water and Oxyclean and brushed it thickly over the stains. I let it dry over night and it lightened the stains imensely. The difference is the stains had been there for a long time. The house had been sitting vacant for 2 years before we moved in and the floors were covered in thick RED SHAG carpet. (straight out of the 70's) When we pulled the carpet out we discovered many stains. It helped for us.

I would go to an independent flooring store that sells hardwood floors and get their
advice and perhaps purchase a cleaner directing from them.

Sounds like you need to have your floors sanded and polyurethaned. If you have 5 coats of poloyurethane on the floor, the pet stains will just wipe up easily. There may not have been enough protective polyurethane on the floor thus the pet urine soaked in. B. S. RN.CCM

S. - you may want to go to a pet or dog blog. I think you will get some good advice there.

Try searching for dog urine removal.

Good Luck

There is a chemical you can buy...usually at specialty stores, like "chemical supply companies". It is called Naptha. It will take dark stains out of even unfinished hardwood floors.I used it on my hardwoods where plants had leaked and left dark stains. Ask someone there before you use it to make sure you are doing the right thing. A friend of mine refinishes antique furniture and he told me about it. I think it will do the trick!

Okay, I'm seriously being a walking advertisemient, but there is a product called Natures Miracle. You can get it at most pet stores, and it will not only clear out the stain, but it will also get rid of the smell so the dog won't find the scent mark. It will help with housebreaking you dog too. It worked with my pugs. Good Luck
