Getting Induced

I am currently 3 days past my due date and the doctor has given me the option of whether or not I want to get induced or not, this was on Thursday. I had decided to so that way I would have Friday (my due date) and the weekend to see if I would go on my own. Nothing has happened and I am scheduled to go into the hospital Monday night and be given a drug called Cytocek. On tuesday morning my doctor said he would come in and break my water and start me with pitosin. I really wanted to wait and go naturally but I am just so uncomfortable and I know my baby is definitley not underweight as she was 6lbs a month ago. :) The doctor said I could expect her to be 8.5 lbs. however I'm expecting about 9lbs. :) So I have no worries that she isn't ready but I have not heard anything good about getting induced however they were from those that got induced before their due date. Has anyone chosen to be induced after their due date? How did it go overall?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you to all who had responded however at the last minute I decided not to go through with the induction. I figured I was just being selfish and should wait a bit longer to see if she will come on her own. I'm hoping so! The only pre-labor symptoms I have are a little bleeding over the weekend, flu-like symptoms and wanting to clean everything yesterday i just couldn't stop myself. I'm hoping all of this means she is on her way soon. I have another doctor's appointment on Thursday and we'll probably make plans for another induction next Tuesday. I just hope she comes before then, I will keep you updated! Thank you for all your support.

Hi S., I have three children and have been induced with two of them. Both times everything went wonderfully. Just becasue you have not gone naturally doesn't mean your little one isn't ready to come into the world girls are stubborn. They like being inside nice and warm. The longer you wait the bigger she will become and the harder the delivery will be. You are better off with the induction since you want to avoid a Csection which happens with first time Moms of big babies.. good luck and no worries just make sure you get pain medication I went naturally on one NOT BY CHOICE and OUCHHHHHHHHYYYYY...kindly B.

Hi S.,
I was in a similar situation 20 months ago. My baby was getting bigger by the day and there were no signs taht he was coming on his own. I was induced 2 weeks late. I went in for the pitosin Thursday at 7am and my son was born Friday morning at 12:30am. I think giving birth for the first time would have been a little scary for me either way, but looking back at it, induction wasn't so bad. The doctor broke my water 7 hours after starting the drugs. It was slow going, but we did finally get there. And there are some positives to being induced. You do all of your laboring in the hospital as opposed to waiting at home. Someone is monitoring you and your baby through the entire process. And you can get an epidural earlier because you have the pitosin to keep you progressing. Don't let anyone scare you...this is your baby and your body...you have to do what's right for both of you. Good luck and let us know how it goes!

Hi S.,
I was induced after my son was a week late. my due date was Nov 27 2003, and it was Dec 1st, when my doctor decided to induce me. The induction went smoothly. They gave me an iv on petocin, on a very low dose around 6pm on the first. On the second, they increased the dose, and my water broke around 5pm that day. I had my son at 8:50pm.

I am hoping that after you posted this message you have gone into labor on your own and you are now at the hospital giving birth. But if not and you are still home worrying over this, I just wanted to say that my first baby was induced with pitocin and my second was completely natural and both were positive experiences. You just make the decision that you feel comfortable with and go with it. Good luck to you and sending you lots of easy labor vibes. Don't forget to update us!

Hi S.
I just want to echo what was already said by Rachel. And add, that when it's not for a medical emergancy, induction carries so many risks & even just additional discomforts that it doesn't seem worth it imo. Spontanous labor has a rhythm, it builds slowly, opening you & preparing you & your baby for birth. Induced labor can create the all discomforts of labor (& more) without bringing you any closer to birth (if your body or baby just isn't ready for it yet). Having gone 10 days, 7 days and 8 days past my due dates with my children, I can respect & understand your wish to meet your baby asap.Try to hold on a little longer though and give your body a chance to do it at the pace that's best for you & your baby, unless something indicates that the baby is in distress. If you feel up to it, try to stay active. A lesiurely walk will help loosen up your muscles and may help labor get started. Please forgive me for being a little graphic with this suggestion, but love making, orgasms and nipple stimulation are all proven, natural ways to give labor a gentle push (assuming your dr hasn't said there is a reason that you shouldn't have sex & that you feel up for it).
Best of luck
D.
