Getting Baby to Drink While Congested??

My baby girl will be one on Friday, and she has a horrible head cold. This really puts a damper on all of the big birthday plans we have made for her! But, more importantly, she is so congested that she cannot drink her bottle. We use the nasal aspirator on her as often as we can and her ped. prescribed an infant antihistimine, but it isnt working very well. Neither is the vicks babyrub, humidifier, or raising her mattress. Any ideas on how I can get her to drink something? My biggest fear is dehydration. She has only had 3 small wet diapers today, and only about 3-4 ounces of drink.

What can I do next?

Hi Susannah, The best medicine I know of would be Cold Head Congestion...I just use the equate (off brand) and it clears my kids up really fast! Now mine can swallow a pill and always have every since they were one but I think they make it in a liquid! Mine have always hated liquid so I taught them how to swallow a pill by just putting it in their mouth and then they drink alot of my tea through a straw and down it would go! I really hope this helps. I don't know if she can drink through a straw but try getting her to drink out of a cup more that way it will be easier then the bottle. She won't lose her breath as easy that way. D.

Susannah~
Our pediatrician prescribed my then 2 1/2 yr old RespiTan. I'm not sure if there is an age limit or anything on it. But it works really good! It is a little costly, because it is something that just doesn't get prescribed that often. But it has a shelf life of 2 yrs. (per the pharmacist) So, if she doesn't need it all you can save it for next time.
Best wishes & Happy 1st Birthday to her!!!

Pedilite Popsicles. They will give her fluid, without having to put her mouth around i.e. the nipple: closing her mouth completely and having to breathe through her nose, which she can't. She can lick or suck on the popsicles. Good Luck- hope DC feels better soon!!

Here is something we did for my daughter when she was very small and had a horrible cold. She was younger than 1, but it should work for a 1 year old too.

We had a large swing, but you could probably think of something else to use. Anyway... we put DD in the swing. We boiled Halls cough drops in some water on the stove, we put the boiling pot under the swing and a large blanket over the top of the swing, covering DD and ourselves. She breathed in the vapors from the boiling cough drops, which helped with the congestion. After that treatment, we would feed her. Maybe, then, you could get some liquids in your daughter.
