From RN of 28 years.....how large is the cervical polyp? Usually, this is a minor procedure that can be done in an out patient setting. The anesthesia should be mild called "local MAC" or local monitored anesthesia care...anesthesia is given through the IV. You need to not eat or drink anything from Midnight the night before the procedure. You need a ride home. Your ride usually has to stay for the whole time you are at the out patient setting. It should actually take an hour or less....now that does not include pre op time, getting changed and securing your belongings, nor interviews by anesthesiologists. the hour or less is actual OR time (operating room time) Immediately following completion of the surgery you will go to the recovery room where they monitor you, your blood pressure, bleeding, how you wake up, drink something and you usually have to tolerate standing up and moving and usually you will have to pee before they will let you leave. ok so Total time from start to finish is about 3-4 hours depending how well you wake up in the recovery room. You may not remember much of what they tell you because you have had a lot of drugs for anesthesia and maybe pain etc. They should give you a discharge sheet which has all the info you need for home care. Your ride should be available to take you home. Take it easy at home. Rest, sleep, drink etc. You may have some bleeding--that is normal. You may have no bleeding. You may have cramping pain but it should be tolerable. This should be a minor procedure. HOWEVER, if the polyp is LARGE or there is more than one, this may require more surgery and for a longer period of time. It may be that you may have to stay over night. Your general health, your age, any long term or chronic illnesses that you have or don't have should be evaluated by your GYN surgeon. Their office should be able to answer any questions you have .######### If the polyp can be removed without anesthesia read the following: ##### IF YOU DO NOT NEED ANESTHESIA, AND THEY CAN DO IT IN THE OFFICE UNDER LOCAL (WHERE THEY NUMB THE POLYP AND REMOVE IT AND THEY DO NOT PUT YOU TO SLEEP). You should be able to drive yourself home, you should have minimal pain and bleeding, and should not take very long at all in the office( 25 mins at most and that is being very generous with time.) The local anesthesia is just a numbing injection at the site or polyp. They should send the polyp for further pathology testing/study to find out if it is not a symptom or danger of something else. They do this with all specimens. It would be a usual thing to do. Tylenol should be the only pain medicine you need..
I hope I have answered your question. I have been a surgical nurse for almost 28 years...I hope this helps and I did not scare you. That is not my intent at all.
