Gestational Diabetes, Odd Sugar Levels

Hello- I have GD and have been on insulin for about 8 weeks. I am 35 weeks along now and surviving bedrest. My sugar levels seem very bizarre to me. I've been slowly requiring less insulin, and have now altogether stopped needing it, both the long acting and short acting. My lows have been in the 60-70's range. I find this so strange. The endocrinologist says that some people can require less insulin as they approach delivery, but everyone at my OB's office was suprised at my levels and found it strange. Story of my life! Baby is still doing okay, I go in twice/week. It's just unsettling that I can't seem to find anyone in the world out there that this happens to. I find out a weight estimate tomorrow, but she has definitely NOT been measuring too heavy like many babies can when you have GD. Anyone out there?? I'd appreciate any input, thanks so much!

What can I do next?

hello

I had GD with my daughter. Up until I went into the hospital, I was being told that I my daughter was going to be 8-9lbs because of the GD. My levels were low as well, but I did follow the diet to the letter. I did have to take the short acting until I went into the hospital for delivery. My daughter was delived via c-section because they initially thought she was no longer feeding from the placenta. I was scheduled in week 38. My "large GD" baby was 5lbs 2 oz when delivered! She's healthy and happy (now almost 4yo). So I would say as long as they are saying the baby is doing ok (I too had to go into the office twice a week to be hooked up to the monitor), dont' worry about the weight. Not all GD babies are not heavy weights!

Best of luck to you and congratulations!

Wow! Congratulations! Both for being about to meet your little one soon and for having low blood sugar levels! I also had GD and it just kept getting worse and worse no matter how perfect I was...but my son was born without any problems, his blood was perfect and the diabetes went away almost immediately. So it's looking awesome for you!!!

I'd keep an eye out for too low numbers, however. If you are off insulin, this shouldn't be a problem though. As for this wonderful mystery, I have no clue but am very happy for you:)

I have GD as well and am almost 38 weeks. I didnt need insulin, I was able to just do the diet change. I have also noticed that my numbers have gotten lower and i can eat more carbs and or sugars than I use to. My baby is also not big at all, she is measuring 5lbs 8oz as of this mornings ultrasound (my first was born a month late 6lbs 5 oz so I am prone to tiny babies). She is healthy and everything looks great as well. I am right there with you. Hope this helps and congrats on your baby ((HUGS))

My youngest daugher was born at 37 wks and wasn't huge at 8lbs 4 oz but was much bigger then her tiny older sister who weighed 6 lb sister but her head was 2" larger (she takes after my husband w/the Charlie Brown size head) which felt like about 50" larger! I was on insulin from about 30 weeks on (I believe-i don't have my baby planner handy - she's 7 now) but things turned out fine). It's scary at first with all of the information that is thrown at you, all of the different scenarios and such, but for every scenario there is usually a well thought out plan. I wish you the best of luck!
PS Bedrest was not something I could really do - w/my first my mother was extremely ill and I was at the hospital non-stop & w/my 2nd I had my first so it was kind of difficult. You do the best you can and try not to worry so much about everything. I know it's easy for me to say, but trust me it takes away from all of it if you are busy worry about everything and you don't get to enjoy the good.

There are some Dr's that believe that GD is a diagnosis looking for a disease. There is very little actual science behind any of the GB stuff, and the numbers used by American Dr are much different than those used by the rest of the world.

Many consider GD to be a natural state of pregnancy. My point, I am sure you are perfectly fine and that your body is doing an excellent job making sure baby gets what baby needs, thus accounting for the strange numbers.

I didn't have it w/ my son (although my initial test was so high they couldn't understand why my long test was so low).

I had GD w/ my daughter too. My levels were ok but a bit high especially after lunch so I had to have the slow acting insulin in the morning. I went in labor at 39 weeks (was told they normally induce at 37-38 to insure baby isn't too big). She was just over 6 1/2 lbs....not too big at all.

Don't stress. Do your best and things will be fine. You are on the home stretch now.
