I put coffee pods in the bottom of my diaper pail and it got rid of the smell. It's replaced with the smell of coffee!
Please help. We have tried everything. In my grandson's room, we have a diaper genie and even though I have tried nearly everything I can think of, the smell coming from the room is horrible. Obviously, the diaper genie's job is to hold the dirty diapers, but I thought there would be less of an odor than if I just used a regular trash can. I have tried cleaning it with ammonia, bleach, baking soda and vineger, but nothing seems to work. What can I do to 'de-funk' the room?
After reading pretty much the same response, we ditched the genie. There is nothing worse than cleaning and cleaning only to have that horrible smell in your home.

We use grocery sacks, put the diaper in it and finish the diapering process by taking it out of the house to the trash outside. Our house doesn't have the smell stored up in the room except for while the diapering is going on...If you put a fan on and crack a window, it leaves quickly. Febreeze sprays are good.
Put the diaper Genie in the garage.
Flip the poop into the toilet before you throw the diaper away. Human waste is not meant to be thrown away. IMO, it's the equivalent of you pooping in the trash can and leaving it sit for days. I'm sure you wouldn't do that! All you have to do is turn the diaper inside out over the toilet and most of the waste will come right off.
Why bother with one? It sounds disgusting having dirty diapers standing around inside the house for a length of time , why not just throw it out in the main trash as soon as you have changed a dirty one?
There is a spray called Poo-pourri and they have a spray for diapers... you sprtiz it in the diaper and the smell goes away. I carry another fragrance in my purse for those moments at the public restrooms... I know it works there. Maybe it will help with your diaper situation.

Ours was terrible! I wound up just buying a new one, because nothing took the smell out.
I now have the Diaper Genie "Elite", and it's less of a problem.
We emptied it on a daily basis so nothing could sit in there for long, and it kept the smell down a lot. We also rinsed it out once a week with baking soda and vinegar so a smell didn't build up.
Take the Diaper Genie outside and let it sit in the hot sun for 4-5 hours. Then spray it down with Lysol. fyi...it's possible the sun can discolor the plastic if it's out there too long. Lastly, change the bag everyday. If it's still a problem, ditch it and keep plastic grocery bags up there. Take it out to the garage every night. We have resorted to keeping a little bathroom trashcan outside of our garage door. We toss dirty diapers in there and then put them in the big trashcan once a day.
Once the child hits a certain age, the diaper pails don't hold back the stench anymore. I just started putting my diaper dekor by the garage door in the garage. It gets aired out every time we open the garage and the smell isn't in the house anymore.
Try taking it outside on a sunny day and let it sit open in the sun for a couple of hours. This always cured any smell issues we had with ours.
I had one years ago when my daughter was a baby. I couldn't handle the smell either so I finally threw it out. I also tried everything I could think of to clean it but nothing worked. Good Luck!
I had the same problem. Solution - get rid of the diaper genie. We take wet diapers to the kitchen trash or use the can in her room and empty it every day or two. Poopy diapers go straight to the outside garbage can. A little more walking involved but there is no longer a funky odor in her room!!
Do not keep dirty diapers indoors. Wrap them up in a plastic bag and throw them outside.
please be aware that all the chemical you use on the things for your child is toxic and can cause problems to you child. If lysol, bleach or what ever of a kind should not be use in a room where they sleep or on what they have around. I just like to mention this in general.
Answers for your diaper genie are plenty already given.
You need to empty them every 48 hours or more frequently, or you can't win. I never put poopy diapers in them, those go into the trash can in the garage. I have tried cleaning them in the past and it is nearly impossible to de-stink them. Get a new one -- it almost doesn't matter what type of can or genie or whatever as long as it has a lid/closure -- and empty it way more often.
Take the Genie out and make sure the odor is coming from there. My genie had a particular smell- from the combination of poo and the odor eliminators in the plastic.
It could be the carpet. It may need a good steam cleaning.
Are you sure it is coming from the diaper genie? I never had trouble with a smell with mine, used it until he potty trained at 27 months. I would smell a little smell when I emptied it, but nothing else. Check the carpet around it, if you have carpet. Do you have a pet that might have gone in the room?
I know once the smell is in plastic, it is hard to get it out. I would toss it and get a new one.
We have the Diaper Champ and it will leave a temporary smell in the area when it gets flipped over, but otherwise we've been very happy with it. it should still get emptied every 2-3 days regardless. Occasionally I'll spray Clorox or wipe with soap and let the plastic air out, but I don't know if that really helps or not...
The other thing we do (when traveling) is stuff an empty wipes or tissue box with plastic grocery/bread bags and put diapers in there. (make sure there are no holes to let the stink out) Twist it closed. Throw the bag away after a few diapers or end of day.
get rid of the genie! we had one for the first three months it was ok then like you said the FUNK!!! it was horrible so we tossed the sucker (put it on the curb and someone picked it up). we bought a cheap bucket and use grocery sacks for liners. its small trash can and we empty it often. if its a poopy diaper we try to take it out right away. good luck. hope you find something that works with the genie.
We have a diaper genie and it does smell... after a few months of using it in daughters room we decided to keep the diaper genie outside and have not had an issue with smell since :)
I have 3 kids - with the first we used a diaper genie, the second a regular trash can with lid, the third a plastic grocery bag. Believe me, if you just hang the bag on a doorknob (bedroom or bathroom), tie it, and take it out every evening to an outside garbage can the smell is much less and clean-up much easier.
