I have a 3 week old baby and I am breastfeeding. Is being very gassy normal for the baby? I have determined it is not my diet, what else could it be?

What can I do next?

I had the same thing with my little girl. I tried changing up my diet as well but nothing worked. It's pretty normal and it passed. I helped her by gently moving her legs and feet in circular motions while she laid on her back. It seemed to help. Good luck!!

My sister in law is having the same problem with her newborn and her doctor recommended cutting out dairy completely from her own diet. Also, if Little Tummies drops don't help, try the Mylecon brand. This is also what her ped. recommended. Good luck and don't give up on breastfeeding!

My BF baby was crying all the time due to severe gas pain especially night time. After lots of remedies finally babies magic tea did help and soothe my child.

My son was an extremely gassy baby when I use to breast feed him and I know it sounds strange but if you eat somthing that gives you gas most likely he'll have gas too. Like cabbage, broccoli, and collard greens. Before you lay him down try walking around or sitting down with him while rubbing and patting his back.

Have you contacted a lactation consultant in your area?

They are a great resource for information.

I too had a gassy one when I was breastfeeding and it was determined that I was producing a whole lot of milk and she was getting TOO Much foremilk and not enough hind milk and the sugars in the formilk were making her gassy. I began to feed two feedings per side until the milk production leveled off. And NO more Gas !!
If it had not been for a wonderful lactation consultant I would have quit. I felt like I was killing my child with gas. She cried so much.
ONce the milk production leveled off we nursed for 10 months.
Good luck to you
I hope this helps

My baby had such bad gas that I had to get Little Tummies gas drops from the store and put them in his milk (once we started feeding him formula) because he was in such pain. Once we started doing the gas drops, he was fine! Oh and LOTS OF TUMMY TIME! :) Hope this helps!

Perfectly normal! INfact 2 of my four kiddos lived on gas drops for the first 3 months. I even had one that I had to give drops to before and after nursing! Sounds like you already observed your diet but still avoiding certain things will help.

spicey things
citrus
broccoli

I had one that caffine really effected

Congrats on your new baby and all your kiddos! If you need any other help/support let me know. I am a Doula and all around pregnancy/birth/nursing/mama guru!

Oh Yes, this is normal! My little Sophie is amost 5 months and exclusively breastfed and she was so gassy at first she would embarass me in public sometimes. We thought it was quite hilarious that something so little could make such a loud noise! LOL! Not to worry it will get better!

I breast-fed two girls. They were so different! #1 was pretty gassy and it was quite smelly! The 2nd one was not gassy but had reflux pretty bad. I just wanted you to know that each child is different and it may not be you!

I have a 2yr old son with reflux. His dr said I could give him gas drops with every feeding because since it doesn't get absorbed in the blood stream you can't overdose. The child just flushes it out. If you don't think they work try this test. Fill sink like you were going to wash dishes with dish soap. Add the full dose of gas drops to water and watch bubbles pop. It may take a few minutes but all bubbles will pop. That amazed me and I am pregnant again and I use the gas drops since they don't go to the blood stream like other gas meds do. Hope this helps!

My daughter was very gassy at first too. I did notice if I drank any carbonated drinks it made it worse.

I just made sure to have the gas drops and did the bicycle movements with with legs. That seemed to help a lot until her digestive system matured.

It may be that the baby is not latching completely on and he/she is sucking in some air. I exclusivly nursed my little boy for the first year and he would get gassy at times also. I always tried to watch what i ate also because i was really kindof scared to eat things that may hurt his tummy. I would say since it is not your diet, just make sure that the baby is latched on tight and kinda feel around and make sure he/she is not drawing in air. Good luck!
