Does anyone know how long garlic would need to grow from seed? I threw out a huge package of seed last fall. I didn't plan it at all. I was hoping it would sprout and my chickens would eat them. I forgot all about it and have since given my chickens to a friend that has a farm. My husband told me that I had garlic or onion planted out at the end of the garden and asked if I planted seed. I totally forgot! Anyway, it is definitely garlic. It's been out there since more than likely July or August and went through the winter. Now they are about a foot tall and smell strong if they are pulled. But the bottom breaks off in the hard packed dirt. My husband doesn't want me to dig for them until I know more.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks. I have no idea what kind it is. I had bought them for sprouting. I just never liked sprouts enough. They sat in the basement for a few years and I finally just threw them out and didn't think another thing of it. They look big and healthy right now.

It depends on the type of garlic. Generally, when the lower leaves start to turn brown it is time to harvest. You have to dig them out rather than pull them out when the time comes. Good luck.

The leaves should turn brown around July or August and you dig them out then. You can braid the leaves and they will keep for a long time. Check it out further on Google. I was going to plant them this year but lost track of time.

I know you arent supposed to water them for a couple of weeks before you dig them out.
