My hubby is going in for a GC that is on dorsal side of his right hand. it is putting pressure on the index and middle finger tendon. he has been in pain for over a year and the swelling is not helping. Has anyone ever had a GC removed what do I get to look forward to for the next two weeks? He is very nervous that the dr will mess up his hand and he wont be able to life weights again. any info would be great TIA.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

DH has had the steroid shots and ha had it drained 2x in the past year. It keeps coming back even worse than when it first appeared. I am asking if any of you have had the surgary and what was the outcome good/bad. But thanks for the advise but we have already gone down the other roads.

My mom had one removed...tenderness and some swelling at the incision site but overall - should have relief...

might not be able to wipe his butt - sorry - but my mom's was on her right hand and she's not ambidextrous like me - so my dad had to wipe her butt for a few days...yeah - it can be degrading - but each case is different!!

Full recovery was about 3 weeks - I THINK - I wasn't there - and she's got full ROM and Full ability!
GOOD LUCK!!!

TIA = Thanks In Advance (I think)

You can get your doctor to give you a steroid injection into the cyst. I did that and it went away. These cysts are commonly caused by using the hand too much or putting too much stress for long periods of time. My wrist got a cyst - the hand I use to move the mouse... and I lost allot of strength in that hand. I would drop things..

Steroid shot directly into the cyst, then wear a supportive sports glove until the cyst is gone.. Keep the glove incase it comes back.

Having it cut out is no guarantee that it will not return. I would opt out of the surgery.. It is invasive and not always 100% guarantee.

Good luck.

I had a GC there as well. I had it removed during the second week of my freshman year of college. It as wrapped in a "half cast" for a couple of weeks to protect the stitches and I could not write as quickly as I needed to during lectures but otherwise I was fine. I was given exercises to do at home after the stitches came out. It has been 15 years and my lifestyle has not changed at all. I am probably weaker on my right hand then I was before but I probably did not follow the doctor's directions with the post operative exercises as well as I should have. If you husband follows post operative orders and he lifts weights already, I guess he will do just fine. Good luck!

I had one of those types of cysts too, right where my middle finger bends at my hand. When I had my carpal tunnel surgery, the dr. removed the cyst at the same time. The incision was about 1/2 inch long. I have not had any problems since having it removed. I really don't think you have too much to worry about. Good luck to your hubby!

I had one removed. I think it was in the same spot (where the wrist bends). It took months to heal and I needed physical therapy for a couple of weeks. Also, although I have full movement back it doesn't quite feel the same as it used to. I would just say to start psysical therapy as soon as possible and continue doing the exercises. Good luck!

If it's true that there are other ways to remove the cyst, as suggested below, I suggest your husband try them. It's true that hand surgery is not always successful or easy. My husband has had two, and they have been minimally successful.

Not sure what they might do now, but there is one in the palm of my hand under the ring finger. It was drained about 27 years ago and they shot it full of cortizone (I think - military hospital dependent status). They told me then that these darn things can come back eventually (as it has, but not nearly as bad yet). Just for info - in case they do something similar w/him.

my other half had one on his wrist at one time, and all we did was slowly drain it with a sterile needle, it is not going to pop like a pimple, you going to need to apply a warm compress first, to soften the skin and remove any potential contaminants, then take a sterile needle (and no distractions) and gently pierce the skin on the outside edge of the cyst, then, with freshly scrubbed nails, gently squeeze the cyst, you are going to what looks like alot of blood first, then, a fairly clean fluid, dont put any anti-anything on the pierce-site at this point, because the cyst will drain off and on for a few days, and if its blocked, it wont drain properly. give it at least 24 hours, check for swelling, fever or redness.. then, it should go ahead and heal up at this point.
