The Hotel Galvez is good (used to smell musty, but that may have changed), so are the San Luis, the Hilton and the Holiday Inn. I grew up in Galveston and all the tourist stuff is back up and in good repair since Ike. Have fun.
Hello all!
What are some good hotels to stay in right at the beach and what are the good family beaches to visit?Restaurants? I haven't been there in forever and I am wondering what the condition is of everything since the hurricane? Someone told me Hotel Galvez is great...anyone else stayed there?

Love the location, travel time
Moody Gardens, Schilterbaun, the gulf shore great vacation time for everyone. Plenty of fastfood places and chain restaurants. Moody Garden hotel a little dated however, I would recommend staying there they have their own waterpark/beach; Great for ages 12 yrs and under. Enjoy!
None of the hotels in Galveston are right on the beach. They are all across the street (busy 6 lane street) from the beach on the Seawall. If you want to be right on the beach then you need to go outside of Galveston proper. Sorry, but I don't have any specific recommendations, since we haven't been in years or since the hurricane. Stewart Beach is probably the most family friendly beach in Galveston. Depending on the age of your kids, I highly recommend that you take the Ferry. It is FREE and my boys love it! You can drive on with your car or park and walk on. Be sure to take some bread to feed the seagulls and look for dolphins!
Rainforest cafe' is neat, moody gardens is a great kids place that's fairly cheap.. there's a new holiday inn right on the sea wall.. try to do priceline and name your own price, if you select at least a 3 star you can't go wrong. We got one for like 85/night when it was normally like 170. And as far as beaches there's really just one major strip, Stewart beach seems to be the hot spot, they have umbrellas you can rent and stuff like that.
